In less than a month, 2023 will be halfway over. I have recently noticed this and realized how fast time flies. Hi there.
This year, in 2023, many Western artists seem to be coming to perform in Japan. I cannot overlook this as a fan of Western music! In this article, I’m going to feature some of the most noteworthy foreign artists based on my personal preference who have stepped on Japanese soil this year or are scheduled to do so.
01. Orianthi
Orianthi is one of the most well-known female guitarists in the world and will be performing in Japan on September 21 and 22.
Orianthi was chosen to be Michael Jackson’s guitarist for live concerts, has performed together with Steve Vai on stage, and has performed with a lot of other noteworthy artists...
I have the image that she comes to Japan quite often and has played at Summer Sonic in the past. You must know this song if you’re a guitarist!
02. Tedeschi Trucks Band
The Tedeschi Trucks Band is an American band led by Derek Trucks who was one of the three New Guitar Gods. He is scheduled to perform in Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka in October. Susan Tedeschi, also a singer and guitarist in this band, is not only a five-time Grammy nominee but she’s also Derek’s wife.
My favorite song by Tedeschi Trucks Band is this one!
03. Mötley Crüe
All of you already know Mötley Crüe is one of the greatest 80’s HR/HM bands, and apparently they are coming to Japan this fall. Unfortunately, I’m worried that no details and dates have been announced as of the end of May, though...
Mick Mars, who had been the guitarist of the band for many years, has retired from touring due to a chronic illness, so John 5 will be performing with the band in Japan.
Feel the wind of the Sunset Strip out of this song!
04. Def Leppard
Def Leppard, one of the leading bands of the NWOBHM (New Wave of British Heavy Metal), is also scheduled to perform in Japan. They are coming to Japan with Mötley Crüe, that is, no date has been announced yet.
Speaking of Def Leppard, I (personally) think that their elaborate chorus work and guitars, and also the touching story about Rick Allen’s accident are what everyone should know.
This song is a must-listen and is full of that original Def Leppard charm!!
05. Extreme
You can usually tell the band name once you see the Washburn N4 held at a lower position than the waist. Extreme, of which Nuno Bettencourt is a member, is also scheduled to come to Japan.
Despite Nuno’s technical guitar and the powerful name of the band, Extreme’s most distinctive feature is that many of their songs have a strong funk beat, but it is also fun to listen to their songs with a modern heaviness and sharpness.
The song by them that I recommend is...
06. Deep Purple
Even if you have never touched a guitar, you must have heard these phrases from “Smoke on the Water” and “Burn”. This well-known band came to Japan this year.
Although the band members are not quite the same as they were in their heyday, they are still very alive and active.
I think I don’t need to introduce “Smoke on the Water” and “Burn” anymore, so let me recommend this one from the album Who Do We Think We Are!
I chose these six bands, but there are still many more who have come or are coming to Japan throughout this year, including Eric Clapton and Toto, but I’m going to stop here.
More and more live concerts are now being held to make up for what most musicians couldn’t do for the past few years. Check the dates and go enjoy live music!
