Comparing Kick Pedals from Pearl

2022-03-07

Theme:Drums & Percussion

Many drummers are very particular about their drum kick pedals.
The comfort of the pedal is completely different depending on the manufacturer, series, and specifications, and many drummers must have a hard time finding the right pedal for themselves.
In this issue, I have compiled a list of what I felt after trying and comparing PEARL kick pedals, so please take a look at it as a reference for your pedal selection.

■ PEARL / P-920 Pedal

PEARL's entry model inherited the design of the Eliminator REDLINE. The features are the aluminum die-cast round cam that allows stepless adjustment of the beater angle and the power shifter allows the footboard to be moved forward and backward in three positions.

First of all, my frank impression was “What! It's an entry-level model?! But the quality is so high!” I guess what I was most concerned about was how the footboard returns after stepping on it since it is a single chain! When I actually stepped on it, it felt like it was firmly gripped to my foot, and if I adjusted the beater angle, I could step on a double quite fast and still play as I wanted.
I am also glad that it has a power shifter, and for those who want to step in a fast rhythm, I recommend adjusting the footboard as well to tap on it with subtle nuances!

I used to play the slide technique with a sock, so I tried the slide technique with this pedal as a test. Since it is a model with an underplate, it is very stable while playing, so I did not feel any blurring.
Also, as those who know what I am talking about, if the footboard has a non-slip surface, it is difficult to slide because the sock is taken away. This model doesn’t have a non-slip surface, so I personally found it very easy to slide.

■ PEARL / P-922 Pedal

This is an entry model twin pedal that utilizes the functions of the Red Line pedal.
The angle adjustment of the beater and the footboard position adjustment function allow you to adjust the pedal to your own preference!

I recommend this model the most for those who are new to twin pedals.
When I used it for 3 hours of practice and 30 minutes of live performance, I found that the natural feel and moderate lightness of the pedal, which uses a round cam, is ideal for beginners who are not familiar with pedal play, and it didn’t not tire me out easily even after long hours of drum play.
The angle adjustment of the beater and the footboard position adjustment functions are very easy to understand, and I was able to adjust the pedal comfort easily without having to look at the manual.

The reason I recommend this twin pedal above all else is its elaborate construction.
The bolts connecting the footboard to the chain are held in place by two different screws and the underplate, which follows the shape of the pedal, didn't even jolt when I played hard. I felt that this hardware was not only stable and playable, but it’s also reliable enough to be expected to last for a long time without damage.

The beater is a two-way beater that can be made of felt or plastic! By selecting felt for a fuller sound or plastic for more attack, this foot pedal is not only suitable for a wide range of music, but is also ideal for electronic drums.

■ PEARL / P-2050C/F

This kick pedal is lightweight while maintaining the functionality of the Red Line pedal. Not only can it be quickly folded with the beater attached without the need for a drum key or hex wrench, but this model also offers stability for professional use.

First, I was shocked at how easy it is to carry. Without using a tuning key or any other tools at all, you can (1) loosen the screws. (2) Fold down the beater. (3) Fold down the footboard. The weight of the unit at hand is an unprecedented 1.6 kg, which is very light! Compared to a certain manufacturer's folding kick pedal, it is more than 200g lighter, so it would be no exaggeration to say that it is the No. 1 easiest to carry kick pedal.

The foot pedal feels very natural thanks to the double chain and NiNjA bearings, and the smooth return of the footboard after each step makes it the perfect pedal for playing delicate and stable rhythms.

The cams come in the four colors shown here, and you can greatly adjust the stepping feel depending on which cam you set.

Of course, these four types of cams alone are enough to change the feel of the treadmill, but I also got CAM-YL and CAM-PL to try them all out because I was tickled with the collector's spirit! LOL!

The ability to handle fairly fast rhythms with the full range of adjustment functions is quite attractive to drummers! I will try these 6 cams and change cams according to the situation, focusing on the following CAM-YL.

In today's practice, I wore this yellow-colored cam! I set the beater angle toward the front and the spring tension a little tighter, and I played for 16 minutes at 180 BPM, which was stable and easy to play.

How do you like it? This time, I compared three different PEARL foot pedals, and I was just so impressed with the P-2050C/F.
I will probably use this pedal for the rest of my life!
I would be happy if this article is a reference for you when you are looking for a pedal.
