A collection of amplifiers with FX send and return terminals that you can get for less than 50,000 yen ~ Combo amplifier ~

2020-11-06

Theme:Guitars

The effects loop (SEND & RETURN) terminal is an indispensable terminal for those who want to use spatial effects, those who use preamp pedals, those who use amp simulators, etc. … in other words, those who are focusing on sound creation. This terminal is usually installed on full-scale amplifiers in studios and live houses. Of course, I would think that many would want to practice using the same connections at home as during actual production or performance. I think there are quite a few people who think, "That's why I want a cheap, small home amp with an effects loop!"

This time, I would like to introduce combo amps with effects loop that you can get for less than 50,000 yen (excluding tax).

■But before that, what is an effects loop?

There are various names such as "effects loop", "FX loop", and "send / return", but they all refer to this terminal.
The "SEND" and "RETURN" terminals are paired to form an effects loop. In a word, it looks like this

  • SEND = Terminal that outputs the signal immediately after passing through the preamplifier circuit in the guitar amplifier
  • RETURN = Input terminal to the power amplifier circuit in the guitar amplifier

I don't usually think too much about it, but inside the guitar amplifier, the signal is transmitted in the order of input → preamplifier circuit → power amplifier circuit → speaker.
It is enough if you understand that the preamplifier circuit is a circuit that adjusts the sound quality of the guitar, and the power amplifier circuit is a circuit that amplifies the volume.

Therefore, the signal that is originally input to the power amplifier circuit through the preamplifier circuit can be taken out from the SEND terminal once before being input to the power amplifier circuit, and then returned to the power amplifier circuit from the RETURN terminal, a “detour” so to speak.
By utilizing this terminal, you can insert your favorite effector between the preamp and power amp on the signal path.
Also, since the signal input to the RETURN terminal does not have to come from the SEND terminal, by connecting the output from another preamplifier to RETURN, the preamplifier circuit of that amplifier is not used, only the power amplifier circuit is used.
This connection is useful when using a multi-effector unit that has a modeling amp or an independent pedal-type preamp.

The introduction has become long, but here is the introduction of the amps.
Let's announce in order of ascending price!
Models in the same series are only introduced at the lowest price point

VOX / AV30

The cheapest model is the well-established VOX hybrid amplifier. A solid-state power amplifier is combined with a preamplifier that uses a vacuum tube. With 2ch specifications, you can choose from a wide range of tones from clean to high gain, and this is probably the strongest amp for home use. By the way, the lower model AV15 is not to be equipped with an FX loop.

Laney / LX65R

Old-fashioned solid-state amplifier. The LX series starts with a 10W model, but the FX loop is included from the 65W model. Even so, the 65W high-power model that can be used in the studio or live is a good value at this price. Anyway, it is cheap and recommended for those who need high output.

BOSS / KATANA-50 MkII

BOSS's KATANA has been a hot topic since its release. This model doesn’t have an FX loop exactly, but it has a POWER AMP IN jack. In other words, it is easy to understand if you say that it only has the RETURN terminal of the FX loop. In recent years, amp simulators and pedal-type preamps have become popular, so this design is in line with that trend. Adding this terminal to the KATANA series, which has preamp sounds and built-in effects, gives the impression that it will be the guitarist's favorite amp.

ORANGE / CRUSH35RT

The 35W model in the ORANGE / CRUSH series, which is worth buying just for the look (??), is next. The CRUSH series has an FX loop starting from this model. It’s recommended for those who like pure analog amps rather than modeling or digital processing.

Laney / CUB-SUPER10

The Laney / CUB-SUPER 10 is the lowest priced full tube amp with an FX loop. Is it a bit unusual for a vintage-style amp to have an FX loop? With only 1ch, the controls include gain, volume, 3-band EQ, and boost… extremely simple. But a simple amp is fine, isn't it? Personally, I think it’s great. I like a small, simple and cute tube amps! I also want to get one.

MARSHALL / DSL1C

Is this really unnecessary to explain this one? Along with the above CUB-SUPER10, it is the lowest priced full tube, but this model is a high gain amplifier with 2ch spes. As expected, the sound is quite different from the studio Marshall, but the controls are quite similar, so you can create sounds at home as if you were in the studio. And the most notable point is the EMULATED OUT. With built-in cabinet emulation, you can enjoy it with headphones.http://www.marshallamps.jp/products/amplifiers/dsl_2018/dsl1c/

ROLAND / JC-22

From here, we are facing an indescribable miracle of standard studio models in a row. You’re sure to see it in almost every Japanese music studio, a small version of the JC120. Like the head of the family, it's great that the RETURN signal is stereo. Also equipped with a headphone out which the JC120 does not have. If you put this guy and the DSL1C side by side, it’ll always feel like a live house.

FENDER / Champion 100

The CHAMPION series is popular as a practice amp, but the FX loop starts from this 100W model. If possible, I would like to see it on the smaller model as well. By the way, the FX loop of the CHAMPION 100 is on the front panel, and is labelled as "PRE OUT" and "PWR OUT".

FENDER / Mustang GTX50, 100V JP

FENDER's proud modeling amp series, the Mustang series, has an FX loop from the GTX 50. FENDER tends to include FX loops only on large models ... The main feature is that both SEND and RETURN are stereo. It’d be cool to combine something like stereo fluctuations on this.

PEAVEY / BANDIT 112

A model with a comfortable high-gain sound unique to PEAVEY, which is natural and intense, unlike modeling and digital processing. This BANDIT 112 is the only one in the TRANS TUBE series that has an FX loop. Although it has a large output of 80W, it has a good volume response, and it is also attractive that it can be squeezed down to a volume that can be used at home. It's bit of an old model, but it's very popular for its powerful high gain sound.

RANDALL / RG80

RANDALL is the most professionally recognized solid-state amp. The RANDALL RG80 is the RG series combo amp that is the current series of high gain solid state amps. Who would buy a solid-state, high-output, high-gain combo in this day and age, you might wonder, but the almost evil high-gain sound will get you addicted once you play it, and it will catch the hearts of enthusiasts.

MARSHALL / MG50FX

MARSHALL's MG series is extremely popular as a practice amp, but the FX loop starts from this model with 50W specifications .... This is quite unconvincing for fans, isn't it? Since the DSL1C also has an FX loop, I would like one on the MG15R, but is it not profitable?

BOSS / KATANA-100 MkII

A 100W model of the KATANA series that appeared earlier. The KATANA-50 had only a POWER AMP IN terminal, but this one has a normal FX loop. There must be something behind making this different from the POWER AMP IN terminal. In addition, there are plenty of inputs and outputs such as a USB terminal and a REC OUT terminal, so the word "latest specifications" is a good match.

That's it. What did you think?
This time was a combo amp edition, so I think that it’s a lineup with a stronger home use color than stacks, and if you narrow it down to an FX loop requirement, you can see that the number of small models will decrease surprisingly. ..
