Some of you reading this article may have already used ChatGPT. However, some may have received nonsensical answers and haven’t used it much since.

The truth is, using ChatGPT effectively requires some techniques. Once you get the hang of them, the likelihood of receiving useful information significantly increases. Let’s start by introducing these techniques!

Tips for Using ChatGPT

1. Assign a Role

When asking a question, try adding a sentence at the beginning, such as “You are a [role].”
For example, if you’re asking about guitar practice methods, say, “You are a guitar teacher.” If you want to understand guitar construction, say, “You are a guitar builder.” By assigning a role, the accuracy of the response improves significantly.

2. Set Constraints

Next, try setting limits on the response. For example, specify “within 300 words” or “in bullet points.” You can also limit the number of suggestions. Doing this makes the response more concise and easier to read.

3. Provide Context

Adding background information about your question helps improve response accuracy. For example, if you want a beginner-friendly explanation, include “for beginners” in your query.

Examples of Using ChatGPT

Here are some practical examples of using ChatGPT.

Case 1: Guitar Practice Menu Suggestions

First, let’s ask about a guitar practice menu.
This time, I specified “for beginners”, but you can change the level to “intermediate” or “advanced”. You can also narrow it down to “scale practice” or “rhythm practice” for more specific suggestions.

For beginners who have bought a guitar but don’t know what to practice, or for intermediate players who feel stuck in a repetitive routine, this kind of advice can help set goals and create a structured practice plan, making it a very useful tool.

*Tip: Adding “without using technical terms” can make the explanation easier to understand!

Case 2: Advice on Buying a Guitar

Next, I asked for advice on purchasing a guitar.

I set conditions assuming someone who is just starting out, such as “under 50,000 yen”, “currently available models”, and “without using technical terms”.

ChatGPT provided a clear, bullet-pointed response, but there were some inaccuracies.
One particularly notable mistake was the mention of “Casiotone CT-S200RD”.
Casiotone CT-S200RD is actually a digital piano, not a guitar.

Based on the description “a combination of an electric guitar and amplifier”, it was likely referring to the EG-5. However, the EG-5 is a discontinued model, meaning it does not meet the specified condition of being a currently available product.

ChatGPT 3.5, which is the most commonly used version, sometimes provides incorrect information, so this is something to be mindful of.

That being said, the recently released GPT-4 (a paid subscription service) has significantly improved in accuracy and response quality.

Here’s the response we got when we asked the same question to GPT-4:

Compared to GPT-3.5, GPT-4 seems to provide clearer and more well-structured responses.

As mentioned earlier, GPT-4 is a paid subscription service, but you can actually use it for free once per day through an AI chat service aggregator called Poe.

Case 3: Songwriting Theme Suggestions

Many singer-songwriters and band members often struggle to come up with songwriting ideas.
With ChatGPT, you can even get suggestions for song themes!

This time, I asked for a theme based on teenage students experiencing youth by including the condition: “A theme that resonates with teenage students.”

As you can see, the response was quite specific!
Asking AI about different themes can sometimes lead to interesting and unexpected answers.
If you’re struggling to find a theme, having trouble putting your ideas into words, or want to explore unique themes, I highly recommend trying ChatGPT!

I only requested one song theme in this case, but you can also ask for “five suggestions”, and if you’re not satisfied with the ideas, you can instantly generate new ones. This can significantly improve your songwriting efficiency!

Case 4: Lyric Writing Suggestions

Have you ever struggled with writing lyrics even after composing a song?
I’m not particularly good at writing lyrics myself, but that’s exactly when ChatGPT can help!
I asked for lyric ideas based on the song theme suggested in Case 3.
Of course, lyric preferences can vary, but having suggestions like this can help concretize the song’s image rather than getting completely stuck.

This time, I wanted to include a classic songwriting element: having the song title appear in the chorus.
So, I set the condition: “Include the phrase ‘Shining Youth’ in the chorus”.

Interestingly, while the term “sabi” is a Japanese word, ChatGPT correctly recognized it as “chorus”. That was quite surprising!

By the way, I also included the condition “Avoid direct expressions”.
If the lyrics generated by AI feel awkward or cheesy, adding this condition can often refine them nicely—highly recommended!
