Hello!
It’s Kaoru the composer here!
This time, I want to talk about “microphones,” which are one of the most fascinating and easy to get swept up into the sea of music equipment.
The reason why microphones are so easy to get lost in the research is due to several factors... Let me explain why.
- Expensive products don't always mean "good"
- Compatibility with voice quality (male voice, female voice)
- Compatibility with different genres
- The difficulty of trying out microphones
Let me explain these in more detail.
"Expensive Products = Not Always 'Good'"
This is something I’ve learned from personal experience. I’ve had the opportunity to visit professional production environments and commercial studios a few times, and there were microphones ranging from inexpensive ones under 10,000 yen to high-end models close to 1 million yen.
When I asked, "Do you use all of these?", the response was, "We use them depending on the situation."
In other words, even the so-called "cheap" microphones can be effective, depending on how they are used.
Also, the "SHURE/SM58," which has been considered the "standard" for years, can be purchased for about 10,000 yen... It really makes choosing the right microphone difficult.
"Compatibility with Voice Quality (Male Voice, Female Voice)"
While it's relatively easy to match microphones for differences between male and female voices, when it comes to "androgynous voices" or "husky voices," the situation becomes more complicated.
As for compatibility, there’s no shortcut except to test them out, which makes the selection process very time-consuming and difficult.
"Compatibility with Genre"
The way you sing changes depending on the genre, right?
For example, with something like "death metal vocals" (death growls), there are cases where the microphone just can’t pick up the sound properly, making it especially challenging for those in the death metal scene.
"The Difficulty of Testing?"
Especially in today’s world, people have become more sensitive about contact with saliva and potential germs on microphones.
Moreover, from the store’s perspective, microphones are valuable products, so some shops may not be very willing to let customers try them out (and I understand this perspective, honestly…).
However, if you’re considering purchasing an expensive microphone, it’s natural to feel scared about buying it without trying it first.
Personally, I still haven’t found a microphone that I’m completely satisfied with, and I’ve been searching for years, trying over 100 different microphones.
So now, I will share a few condenser microphones that I personally like and recommend!
I believe that the MXL / 440 is the strongest contender in the under ¥10,000 range!
The biggest feature of this microphone is that it doesn't have any obvious quirks about it!
In other words, it has no additional features and can be used for virtually any genre.
It works well not only for vocals but also for acoustic instruments, though it’s not ideal for distorted guitars or intense sounds.
It weighs 544.3g, so it feels quite substantial.
LEWITT / LCT240Pro ValuePack Black
This is the most cost-effective condenser microphone from LEWITT. It comes with a dedicated shock mount and is priced around ¥15,000.
Personally, I’ve been using it for about 3 years now.
The body is fully metal, which gives it high durability and a premium feel.
I often use it for vocal and acoustic guitar recordings, and it captures even the smallest nuances, resulting in high-quality recordings.
However, it sometimes picks up background noise, such as air conditioning sounds, so you may need to adjust the recording environment.
What I particularly like about it is that the vocals blend into the track without requiring too much processing!
The reduced need for post-production work has helped me save time.
The gunmetal BLUE design of this condenser microphone is quite eye-catching. It caters to the needs of creators in various fields, such as game streaming, video production, and recording. The performance and sound quality are top-notch.
One of the best features is its incredibly light weight of 336g! Not only is it easy to carry around, but there's also no concern about wobbling when mounted on a mic stand. The ability to use it with confidence is extremely important!!
NEUMANN / TLM102 NICKEL Condenser Microphone
This is a condenser microphone from NEUMANN, a brand with immense popularity among professionals.
The brand logo on the front of the body is very inspiring...
Many people associate NEUMANN with high-end models, but they also offer products under ¥100,000!
Despite its affordable price, it’s crafted with their overwhelming technical expertise, making it extremely high-performance.
It matches a wide range of vocal types, so I highly recommend it for both male and female voices!
The newly developed large diaphragm capsule (cardioid) allows for recording large sound sources such as percussion, drums, and amplifiers.
It can record accurately without distortion, even at higher volumes.
There’s a pop screen built into the grill, so there's no need to buy a separate one, which is a nice bonus!
That wraps up my recommendations for condenser microphones.
Although it's difficult to try out every product due to the large lineup of condenser microphones, you can really feel the depth of music when you explore them.
Perhaps you now feel confident enough to search for a mic that matches you?
And if you have any recommendations, feel free to send me a private DM of what you like!
