Well, last time we talked about "our first effectors", so this is a continuation! Intermediate edition, is it?
In my case, when I entered university and went out to a live house, the world expanded at once, and I became a little interested in distortion.
Ah, now that’s a swamp (laughs).
I'm still in the swamp (laughs).
But, as with guitarists, aren't there some people who hook up directly to the amp?
Well, people who don't run as effectors.
But not us (laughs).
Fortunately or unfortunately (laughs).
Fortunately! (Lol)
At that time, many people used rack effectors.
Yeah, I really admired them!
There were also 1U racks and half racks. Certainly from BOSS...
Yeah, there were. Quite a variety. Certainly Comps and Parametric EQs.
It's cool to build a rack instead of sound.
It's already exciting just seeing the photos of artists who are building in layers like a refrigerator. There are wireless systems in there, too.
As expected, I didn't go that far.
Yeah, that's impossible for an amateur (laughs). Especially, Tomoyasu Hotei and BUCK-TICK that I saw in magazines, top professionals assembled huge racks. Blood Show! Or Pete Cornish! And so on! They don't sell them anywhere! (laughs).
That's right ...
But, there were a few really small ones and compact ones in the rack system
Oh, yes. I put mine on a tray.
That's right. I imitated that and bought one. But that's it...
You can't hear the sound of the individual though (laughs).
Yeah, it's a sound produced by the whole system... By the way, did you buy any rack effects?
I bought some half racks, but I didn't use them much.
Do you prefer to stomp on effects? (Lol)
I want to stomp on them! (Laughs) There was that too...
Editor's Note: Due to the structure, rack-type effectors basically do not have a switch to step on.
However, I liked to use BBE's Sonic Maximizer rack effector.
Ah! I used to have one too! I used the two mixes recorded on the MTR through a sonic maximizer to create sound.
Ah, I see. At that time, you were building a 3U rack with wireless, sonic maximizer, and a tuner.
I haven't seen many rack tuners these days.
It was popular before the pedal-type tuner came out.
Well, there used to be only the rack type or a needle tuner!
Oh yeah, the signal would go out of the volume pedal out to the tuner.
It's kind of like ancient times...
(Lol). Speaking of the old days, many people brought in amp heads and cabs a long time ago, but now they use preamps, and bring them to shows.
They’re light.
When I started playing bass, they didn't have the concept of a preamp. Did they start to appear after the ‘90s?
Sans amp was a pioneer. You can use it on the line, but you can also get a rugged atmosphere.
At that time, I got the impression that everyone was using them in the band.
It's an important factor for bass players now, preamps.
Yes.
On the other hand, at that time I was... When I started playing at live houses, Grunge and Britpop were in full swing.
They were popular.
It came down to this! I thought. Clean or Heavy Distortion! Two choices….
Two extremes (laughs).
That’s why I went to the Big Muff or the RAT. It seems like that’s all there was at my feet.
It's easy to understand in a sense.
Yup. That made me feel good.
It depends on the genre, though, doesn't it, the choice of effector you use?
Big Muff was great, I still love it. When I step on it, it feels like "I got eternal sustain, Jojooooo!"!
No, I'm not sure about that.
….
Well, Big Muffs are also bestsellers.
I saw the so-called Russian Muff that I was using at that time at a certain musical instrument store, the same model but an exorbitant price!
Both Big Muff and RAT are revolutionary in the history of effectors… they are historic.
Yeah, RAT was impressive as it appeared in the lyrics of a Ringo Shiina song! Speaking of revolutionary effectors, it tends to be used more for recording, but the POD was epoch-making!
I have also completed bass recording using the POD.
Oh, I used it quite a bit with The Captains.
However, at that time, the staff simply forgot to rent a bass amp (laughs).
Is there such a thing (laughs)? Then, it's a bittersweet memory.
I remember recording with POD because it couldn't be helped.
But the sound is good as it is. It's well done.
By the way, for a while, I chose effectors just by looking at them. "I really want to put this at my feet!" Like a Fuzz Face.
It's nice to look at (laughs).
You can coordinate them with all red.
Dyed in rosy! What? (Lol)
Oh yeah, and everything?
Is for love!
The story of effectors is endless, so we will continue this next time!
