[Guitar DIY] Surprisingly easy! Peg button replacement

Hello!
My name is Fujioka Takuto and I'm a guitarist who can also perform therapy.

By the way, have you ever modified your guitar by yourself?
I think many people think it is difficult to modify the guitar, and hesitate to do it, because they don’t want to break the guitar. “Guitar DIY” sounds difficult, but there are actually quite a lot of things that can be done easily!

This time, I would like to take a look at the part called the peg button!

The peg button is the part to turn the peg when tuning the guitar.
Pegs also come in a variety of brands and designs. Gibson uses Kluson-type buttons, and sometimes people say, "This guitar doesn't look good without these pegs".
It is no exaggeration to say that the peg buttons are the ears of the guitar if the guitar head is looked at as a face.

Did you know that peg buttons are actually easy to replace?

There are various types of pegs, and each of them has different design, but if it is a rotomatic type of peg sold by GOTOH or GROVER, you can replace it by simply removing a screw with a single screwdriver! (Be careful not to lose the small parts)
Even if you are not confident in replacing peg buttons or you are already satisfied with the pegs that are currently on, it is still worth trying (゜ ∀ ゜).

Just loosen the strings and then remove the screws with a screwdriver! They can be easily removed.

Of course, if you replace the peg buttons, the appearance will change, but there are some other functional changes as well.
One is weight.
Most peg buttons are made of metal or plastic, but there are also wooden ones, buffalo horns and ebony. (The pegs in the photo above are made of plastic.)
If the peg button is made of metal and you want to make the head a little lighter, I recommend you try replacing the peg buttons with plastic or wooden ones, and vice versa.
Some people are concerned about durability, but I think that there is no problem in normal use whether they are made of plastic or wood.

The second is the ease of turning the pegs.
Replacing only the peg button does not change the tuning accuracy, but replacing it with a different shape or size will change the ease of tuning.

Depending on the shape of the 6-unit type peg, you may feel the distance between the peg buttons may be too close.

In such a case, by replacing the peg buttons with a slightly smaller size, the distance between the pegs will be slightly widened, so your finger does not touch the next peg when tuning.
The appearance has changed considerably!!!!!

Make sure to measure the size of the peg before purchasing new peg buttons, as the size and shape differ depending on the manufacturer.
When I bought peg buttons for the first time, I didn't check the size, and could not use them. Basically, you have to do Guitar DIY at your own risk. Do not push them in forcibly. Otherwise, the peg button may crack, or even if it could be attached, the peg may not turn smoothly. Also, please note that GOTOH does not handle only peg buttons.
Sound House seems to have a semi-custom order system for GOTOH products, so when you want to replace each peg, please contact them for the peg buttons you are looking for.

This is my DEAN guitar banjo.
Originally, all the hardware was black, but I replaced it with pearloid peg buttons to match the logo and inlays.
You can easily decorate your guitar like this!

What do you think!? I hope you now understand how to replace the peg buttons.
By the way, Sound House handles SCHALLER peg buttons as well, so please check them out!

See you soon!
