A stereo tone-shaping FET compressor featuring four character switches and variable saturation control.

In addition to standard ratio, threshold, attack, and release controls, the 1978 features four character switches offering a wide range of compression flavors, and a variable saturation control that adds harmonic distortion to the signal. The sidechain function includes sidechain insertion points on both channels and a comprehensive, flexible sidechain EQ section, allowing for selective LF/HF control of specific frequencies for precise frequency-aware compression, such as de-essing. The wet/mix control allows for parallel compression by blending the processed signal with the dry signal.

Furthermore, a fast-responding dual-color backlit VU meter is used to indicate the amount of added saturation. Time-delay relays are incorporated into the output for clean power-up and power-down without pops or bangs, and a low-hum toroidal linear power supply is employed.

The 1978 is a unique bus compressor, characterized by its distinctive compression, controlled distortion, tone shaping, and wet/dry mixing. This compressor delivers a distinctive, elusive sound that sets it apart from others. It glues mixes together, brings out the bass, controls the treble, adds warmth and distortion, smooths, and broadens the sound. It offers a more analog-sounding tone at an affordable price.
