Installing CLASSIC PRO 900EP Ear Pads onto a SONY MDR-CD900ST

The CLASSIC PRO / 900EP has been well received as a high-quality yet affordable replacement ear pad for the SONY MDR-CD900ST/7506. However, we sometimes receive inquiries saying, “No matter what I do, I just can’t install it!!”

In fact, the 900EP is made to fit tightly so that it won’t easily come off once installed, and some reviews mention that it was quite difficult to attach.

So this time, I have come up with a method that anyone can use to install them easily without any tools.

First, the mounting side of the 900EP looks like this.

A firm vinyl ring is visible on the inside.

This is the part that makes it difficult to attach.

With this method, you first stretch this vinyl.

As shown in the image above, pull it out little by little—about 1–2 cm at a time—going all the way around. It won’t tear even if you apply a fair amount of force, but be careful and adjust your strength as you pull.

When compared to before stretching, it appears slightly larger now.

The key is to stretch the entire ring like this so it becomes more flexible and easier to fit.

Hook it onto the headphones at an angle.

It may be a bit hard to see, but the upper section between the yellow circles is hooked in place.

Up to this point, it should go on relatively smoothly.

While holding down the side that is already deeply hooked (on the left side of the image), hook the opposite side into place.

As shown in the image above, hold it in place with your left hand while using your right hand to hook it on little by little. When doing this, pull on the firm vinyl material that you stretched earlier. Pulling on the softer material may cause it to tear.

The last 5 cm or so may be a bit tricky, but if you stretch the vinyl beforehand, it should go on relatively smoothly. If you still can’t hook it on at this stage, go back to the beginning and try stretching the entire ring a bit more. The key is to stretch the whole thing evenly, not just at one spot.
It will definitely fit, so never try to cut it.

Installation complete!

It may be a bit tricky at first, but once you’ve done it, it should become fairly easy. You might think that stretching it would make it loose, but it actually fits snugly.
