[2023 Edition] Top 5 Recommended Popular Multitrack Recorders

2023-07-13

Theme:Software, PA

Multitrack recorders (MTR) are used for band recordings and music production. Although recording with DAW software has become the mainstream due to the evolution of computer technology, MTRs are still a very popular tool today thanks to its intuitive operability and usability that only hardware can offer.

My first MTR was a four-track type that recorded to cassette tape. This MTR allowed me to experience the joy of overdubbing that creatively mixes while ping-pong recording* with limited tracks to build up the mix one by one. Many musicians may have learned to record on MTRs and they understand the level of difficulty that goes into making punch-in/out recordings, the stress of recording in a single take, and the process of making demo tapes. Today, some MTRs can be connected to a computer and use DAW software for recording, editing, mixing, and mastering, and more and more MTRs can also handle real-time music streaming. In this article, I’m going to show you the ranking of the latest recommended MTRs that have evolved.

What is an MTR?

MTR stands for multitrack recorder, a device that allows for overdubbing. In the 80’s and 90’s, cassette tapes and Mini Discs were used for recording media, however since the year 2000, media recording devices gradually evolved into built-in hard disks, CD-Rs, and then to SD cards. Currently, data that can be connected to computers have become mainstream.

Purposes

  • Band practice/studio recordings
  • Instrument or vocal practice/lessons
  • Music production
  • Podcasting
  • An audio interface

In addition to recording, MTRs can also be used for band practice, instrument lessons, podcasting, and more purposes.

Reasons to use an MTR

Record easily without using a computer

No need to start up the computer or software. Just start recording whenever you want or as soon as an idea comes to mind.

Reduce the amount of equipment

You don’t need to carry as much equipment when practicing or recording in the studio. It can easily go wherever with you.

For analog-like operability

Many people prefer analog sliders and knobs on their mixers. The advantage to using hardware equipment is that it allows for intuitive control of subtle nuances that are difficult to express with a mouse.

How to choose

Sound quality

Select a device that can record at as high a resolution as possible, like 24-bit/96kHz. 24-bit is enough, but recently recorders that feature 32-bit float recording are also on the market.

Number of inputs/outputs

Choose a recorder with the number of inputs that covers the number of instruments or equipment that you need to be connected. A model with many outputs can be used for monitoring by connecting it to multiple speakers.

Number of simultaneous recording/playback tracks

It is also important to know how many tracks can be recorded at the same time. The more tracks that can be recorded simultaneously, the greater range of recording options such as recording single takes in a band or multi-recording of drums.

Functions

Different models offer various functions: Audio interface, guitar amp simulator, synth instrument, sequencer, smartphone app connectivity, and so on. Choose the one that best suits your purpose and your style.

How was it? I am still so attached to my AKAI DPS16 MTR. Recording was so much fun that at the time I forgot to eat and was so absorbed in the recording process. Recording and songwriting are time consuming tasks, so the longer I am involved with the equipment, the more attached I become to it as if it were my own partner. Also, you will naturally acquire knowledge of mixers, effectors, and mixing/mastering techniques, and MTRs will help you grow together. We hope that you will be able to find your “one and only”.
