Are you thinking about having your child learn the violin, but worried about the cost of having to replace it as they grow? Many parents share this concern. If this sounds like you, then look no further! We're excited to introduce the 2023 edition of fractional violins from our very own brand, PLAYTECH, designed specifically for children!
■ What is PLAYTECH?

PLAYTECH is Sound House's own brand of musical instruments. We offer a wide variety of instruments, from violins to guitars, basses, pianos, drums, wind instruments, and more.
Our PLAYTECH violins are produced in overseas factories, but before they are shipped to our customers, our dedicated staff carefully inspects and adjusts each one. We also offer a 3-year warranty, so you can use your violin with peace of mind.
■ What's the Ideal Size for a Fractional Violin?
First, what is a fractional violin?
According to Yamaha:
Adult full-size violins are referred to as 4/4 size, while violins for children are called "fractional violins." The smallest commonly available size is 1/16, and they increase in size to 1/10, 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, and 3/4.
At Sound House, we offer approximate size suggestions based on the player's height. However, since children have different arm lengths and physiques, this blog post will introduce a common method used in music schools to determine the appropriate fractional violin size.
First, have your child hold their current violin as if they were playing it, and grasp the scroll. If they can hold the scroll naturally in the playing position, the violin is the right size for their current physique. On the other hand, if they need to bend their left arm more than usual to reach the scroll, it means your child has grown and the violin is too small.
While this is just a guideline, many music schools use this method to select fractional sizes. So, why not take a moment to check if your child's current violin size is still appropriate?
■ PLAYTECH Fractional Violin Lineup

The PLAYTECH fractional violin series includes the PVN300 series and PVN500 series (as of the end of February 2023).
The PVN300 series offers excellent value for its price, featuring a solid top and ebony fittings. Sizes include 1/16, 1/10, 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, and 3/4. The PVN500 series is a higher-end model, using spruce for the top and delivering quality that exceeds its price point. Sizes include 1/2 and 3/4.
■ Our String Instrument Expert's Top Picks! PLAYTECH PVN500 Series
PLAYTECH PVN512 Outfit Violin Set 1/2
PLAYTECH PVN534 Outfit Violin Set 3/4
Out of the models mentioned above, my top recommendation as a string instrument specialist is the PVN500 series! Compared to the PVN300 series, the overall construction of the PVN500 violins feels more luxurious, offering exceptional quality for their price. I've played them myself and found that they have a richer sound than the PVN300 models, resonating beautifully the more you play. The included case is an oblong type, as shown in the photo, and comes with a bow, rosin, shoulder rest, and tuner. While the price is slightly higher than the PVN300 series, the craftsmanship of the instrument and the comprehensive set contents make it well worth the investment!
We also have a video of violinist Jill playing this instrument, so please take a look if you'd like! She played both the 1/2 size and 3/4 size violins.
■ For Those Looking to Save on Costs: The PLAYTECH PVN300 Series
If you're looking for an even more budget-friendly option than the PVN500, we recommend the PVN300 series. Like the PVN500 series, it comes with a bow, rosin, shoulder rest, and tuner. The included case is a shaped type, as shown in the photo. The PVN300 series also offers a wider range of fractional sizes, making it easier to find the perfect fit for your child's height.
We also have a video of violinist Jill playing the PVN344, the full-size model from the PVN300 series. We hope you'll check it out as well.
