Have you ever listened to music called “chiptune”? This is the music that is mainly composed of the built-in sound chips from the 1980’s personal computers and video game consoles. To put it simply, it’s music full of ‘beep beep boop’ sounds, but you have to really listen to it... so let’s get it started!
Wiklund / Space Cats
A characteristic tune that starts with the sound like cat’s meowings. A stylish melody is weaved in the eccentric mood. Personally, I especially like the bassline that starts around 00:50
Dimeback / Titanium Star Parlor
A tune with a speedy melody and rhythm excite my heart. Please pay attention to the elaborate development around 2:37, which is really cool. I remember when I first listened to it, I unconsciously muttered “cool...” to myself. It will be sure to put me in a good mood the next time I go for a drive.
Laamaa / Talossa II
This one has chiptune elements all around the tune that are a little different from the previous tunes. Starting at around 1:18, the fantasic pad sound melody begins and the sidechained development just grabbed my heart. It’s a little different from pure chiptune, but I picked this one because I strongly felt the diversity and potential for chiptune sounds in music.
Kgb525 / Walk the Walk
A fun song with a jumpy rhythm. For those who have been listening to the tunes I’ve introduced here so far may have noticed, listen to how well chiptunes go with stylish melodies. How the sounds are used is the key to creating a tune with excellent taste. This is one of them.
Kubbi / Indolence
Here is the last one. It features a melancholic melody that gives the image of staring off into the distance, and you can imagine any scenes from your mind. I personally like the strong bass. The song that I want you to listen to with your eyes closed.
How was it? The charms of chiptune run deep, and I still can’t explain it well enough, but if you like and are interested in the chiptune, why don’t you try searching for a favorite tune for yourself?
P.S. At Sound House, we have synths that can easily produce chiptune-like sounds. If you are interested, come check it out!
