Hello!
I’m Kaoru the composer!!
This time, I’d like to talk about dynamic microphones.
Microphones are equipment that people’s preferences vary greatly on, so this will be a very personal discussion.
First, let’s briefly explain what a dynamic microphone is!
“What is a Dynamic Microphone”
Basically, it’s a microphone used in live performances or karaoke!
Even if you’re not a musician, many of you might have said that you used this kind before.
To explain the operating principle in simple terms:
“Inside the microphone body, there is a diaphragm that captures sound, and the movement of this diaphragm is converted into an electrical signal.”
For beginners, this might sound a bit complicated, but don’t worry—it’s not something you need to know!
“Differences Between Dynamic Microphones and Condenser Microphones”
Compared to condenser microphones, dynamic microphones have the following characteristics:
- Durability
- Low cost
- Simple and easy to handle
- Do not require external power (phantom power).
Now, I would like to carefully introduce some recommended products available at Sound House.
CLASSIC PRO / CM5 Dynamic Microphone
Sound House proudly offers this ultra-affordable Classic Pro microphone, delivering both high quality and great value.
Its simple, standard shape closely resembles the classic SM58, a staple in the microphone world.
It truly achieves such high performance at such a low price that you could call it “price-breaking”.
If you think cheap means bad, try purchasing one—you’ll likely be surprised by its quality!
There is a little noticeable noise, but once mixed with other instruments, it becomes virtually unnoticeable.
(Note: noise levels may vary depending on the individual unit!)
In my experience, this mic seems well-suited for recording acoustic instruments.
At this price, you don’t have to be too careful with handling it, and it’s also fun to customize it a little bit.
Despite costing only 1,080 yen, it even comes with a microphone holder, an adapter screw, and a convenient hard case for storage.
AKG / P3S Dynamic Microphone
Personally, I’m a big fan of AKG, so I wanted to introduce this one.
This microphone has a relatively wide cardioid pattern among directional microphones.
In other words, it picks up sound over a broader area.
This makes it suitable for recording a variety of instruments, though it seems to struggle a bit with low frequencies.
The grip features an on/off switch that can be operated by hand, making it perfect not only for live performances but also for streaming or telework.
By the way, it tends to pick up a lot of handling noise, so it might be best to purchase it with the assumption that you’ll be using a stand!
MXL / LSM-9 POP YELLOW
Most microphones are usually black or silver, but this microphone comes in four color variations.
So, it’s perfect for those who want to show their personality, and it really stands out in music video shoots!
With an all-metal body, it offers high durability and a premium feel.
In terms of sound, it’s very flat and neutral, making it suitable for both male and female voices.
SHURE / SM58S – Classic Dynamic Microphone
This “classic” dynamic microphone has reigned at the top for many years.
Even though new products are released every year, it’s amazing that this model continues to be a long-time hit!
Sound quality, durability, and cost performance—there’s nothing to complain about.
I’ve visited many studios, and this microphone is almost always available.
That shows just how much professionals trust it.
I personally recommend the version with the built-in ON/OFF switch.
By the way, there’s also a stand and cable set that’s sold separately.
If you buy everything together, it’s a really great deal!
SHURE / SM58S Stand & Cable Set
SHURE / BETA57A Dynamic Microphone
Alongside the SM58, another microphone I highly recommend is the BETA57A.
The design has less rounding on the grille compared to the SM58.
In terms of sound, the high frequencies are very pleasant.
You can record clear sound without the harsh, sharp feeling often found in the high range.
It can be used for many instruments and vocals, making it truly an all-around microphone!
SONTRONICS / PODCAST PRO RED
This is a recently released, handmade dynamic microphone from the UK.
Its shape resembles a condenser microphone.
It’s very stylish and comes in a variety of colors, making it look great even as part of your interior.
You can also adjust the angle by turning the side screws.
It’s suitable for almost any use, including:
- Podcasts
- Radio broadcasting
- Gaming
- Streaming
- Video calls
- Music
This is a microphone you’ll definitely want to have on hand.
That concludes my introduction on dynamic microphones!
Not only are they functional, but compared to the past, many models now excel in design as well.
