Searching for the best strings-with love from the mud

2020-06-26

Theme:sound&person

Hello. My name is Igni
Isn't it difficult to choose strings?
A wide variety of manufacturers, gauges, materials...
There are various types, and it is very deep if you try to find the best string. Bass strings are expensive, so it is costly to try out each set of strings.
So this time, I would like to introduce my favorite strings that I use on my bass. Since the review is for basses, I think it will be easier to understand the nuances than other reviews. Please read it before you delve into the deep world of strings.

* There are many good string brands other than the ones introduced below. I selected the strings of which I had a good impression in a particular point rather than the overall score (the number of matching genres and instruments). Also, this review is based on my personal opinion, though I try to write it from an objective point of view.

■ Fender CS Custom Classic Jazz Bass (Alder Body, Rosewood Fingerboard)

Theme "Pursuit of Fender Sound"
Best string Fender / 8250M

The Fender sound features slightly muffled, not too bright sound. So it fits well in a band, and even if you boost the sound, it doesn't stand out in a bad way. Compared to D'Addario's EXL, this string has sharper highs and richer mids, and compared to the DR Sunbeams, the mids and lows are cleaner. This sound matches well with the Jazz Bass, and you can enjoy the attractive Fender sound. D'Addario is recommended for those who prefer a little noisier sound, those who want to make the active Fender sound a little more passive sound, and those who use JB type basses other than Fender, but want a Fender sound. Also, the 4th string is thicker and a little firmer. Since it is a tapered string, sustain will not be suppressed.

■ Tokai PB-60 ('82)

Theme "Upright Bass Sound"
Best string D'Addario / ECB82

To start from the conclusion, it didn't sound like an upright bass...
I had an opportunity to play bluegrass. I thought of a double bass, but I could not play it. What I came up with was an upright bass! I tried various strings and finally I found this string.
Compared to the Fender 62 type, this PB type has a slightly narrower range and a slightly muffled sound. Thomastik-Infeld's JF is bright and too soft and subtle. D'Addario's ETB has a thin sound, so I decided not to use it. I like the attack,
so the result was this.
I had the string height set very high and placed a piece of cloth under the bridge to lightly mute. If you play hard, the strings gave a thick sound, and I thought the sound was good enough considering that it was an actually an electric bass. If you play it in a band, it sounds like an upright bass.

■ Gibson Thunderbird ('92)

Theme "Sound that can be used for any music"
Best string R.Cocco / RC4AB N

I tried the R. Cocco / RC4AB N, intending to play any type of music with the Thunderbird. I searched for thinner strings, as I thought thinner strings go well with the muffled sound of the Thunderbird, and selected the R. Cocco / RC4AB N, which is a little thicker than the same gauges of D'Addario.
They were as good as I expected. These can be used for even funk and pop. There are various merits of using the R. Cocco / RC4AB N, like the fact that they are easy to bend, picking is easy, and there’s less burden on the neck.
If you are having trouble making sounds with the muffled sound of the Thunderbird, why not give it a try?
I felt that D'Addario had a thinner sound than R. Cocco, so please try D'Addario as well.

■ Phoenix TWB-8 FL (Alder body, maple fingerboard fretless 8 strings)

Theme "fretless"
Best Strings KEN SMITH / Compressor Medium Light 6-Strings

There is no set for 8 string bass, so I will review only 2nd to 7th strings. I use KEN SMITH strings for the 1st and 8th strings.
I like fretless bass, so I tried various strings and I found the KEN SMITH / Compressor Medium Light 6-Strings.
The KEN SMITH round strings (tapered core) were good, but I was worried about damaging the bass, so I tried Thomastik-Infeld's JF flat strings, but the attack sound was not good. I also used the KEN SMITH slick round for stainless steel flat strings, but they were not good, either. Eventually I decided on half round strings. I like the picking feel, and the strings are not too mellow, so they can be used for various genres. For the ebony fretboard, the Thomastik-Infeld seems to suit it better.

■ AP (Aria Custom Shop) IGB-014T

Theme "For light, gorgeous solos"
Best string F-BASS / 4string set

I reviewed this strings before using the same bass (the preamp is different), so I'm reposting it.
I don't like stainless steel strings, but I was interested in exposed core strings and bought these. This is a comparison review of the D'Addario Prosteel and JIM DUNLOP nickel strings. These are less grainy, and they fall between nickel and stainless steel strings.
The attack sound and fret noise sound is like that of stainless steel, but it feels quiet when playing with fingers. However, the pull sound is similar to stainless steel. The biggest difference is the sound of the 4th string. It has a long sustain and a rich overtones. It's okay because I chose these strings for solo, but they may not be good for playing simple bass lines. Also, if you play the 2nd string without muting together with the 4th string, it sounds a little muddy.

What do you think? I'll be glad if this will be of help to you.
