The Rupert Neve Designs RNDI-M is the smallest model in the acclaimed RNDI series, an active direct box (DI). It's compact enough to fit on a pedalboard, yet delivers the same sound as its larger-end counterparts.
Compact Active Transformer DI
The RNDI-M features the same Rupert Neve Designs custom transformer and discrete FET input stage as the best-selling RNDI, RNDI-S, and RNDI-8, delivering the incredible tone and clarity of this award-winning series in a pedalboard-friendly format.
This robust, compact design packs a wealth of features into a rugged, compact enclosure, bringing the uncompromising sound and dynamics of Rupert Neve Designs DIs to even more musicians and engineers.
Compact Design, Great Tone
The RNDI-M is compatible with a variety of instrument-level sources, including electric guitars, basses, synthesizers, keyboards, piezo pickups, and more.
Its discrete, Class-A circuit topology is built around Rupert Neve's custom transformer, delivering exceptional sonic performance and a stunningly natural sound from below 5 Hz to well beyond 90 kHz. It handles input levels up to +20.5dBu, and its low-impedance, transformer-coupled output stage minimizes signal loss between devices, even when long cables are used.
■Development Background
Developed during experimentation with a new transformer design, the RNDI's circuitry was fine-tuned through a series of listening tests with the most popular high-end DIs. During testing, it consistently revealed new dimensions to the sound, almost breathing life into the instrument. The low end was richer, deeper, and fuller, and the high end achieved outstanding clarity without any harshness.
""The RNDI stood out. It was something that musicians could see and want to use themselves,"" says the development team.
Since its introduction in 2015, over 35,000 RNDI channels have been sold, and it's used daily by a wide variety of artists, including Billie Eilish, The Rolling Stones, Olivia Rodrigo, Paul Simon, Billy Strings, AC/DC, Thundercat, Tycho, Halsey, Jack White, and Stevie Wonder.
■Signature Sound
RNDI-M's unique precision, tone, and response are achieved through the perfect harmony between Rupert Neve Designs' custom transformer and Class-A discrete FET input stage:
・Custom Transformer
RNDI-M's custom output transformer adds musical harmonics and dimension to your sound while providing superior passive isolation. The low-impedance, transformer-balanced output ensures consistent performance, even over long cable runs, for peace of mind on stage and in the studio.
Class-A Discrete FET Amplification
RNDI-M's Class-A discrete FET input stage features a high-impedance 2.2 MΩ input powered by external +48V phantom power, providing consistent performance with a wide range of instruments and other sources. The Class-A design eliminates crossover distortion, ensuring a pleasing combination of second- and third-order harmonic content dominates. These subtle yet deeply musical harmonics contribute to the richness of the sound.
Wide Bandwidth and Ample Headroom
RNDI-M delivers flat response within 1/4 dB from 28 Hz to 60 kHz and within +/- 1 dB up to 90 kHz, including low-frequency response below 5 Hz. But measurements are only part of the equation—this wide bandwidth, combined with the harmonic response of the output transformer, delivers a perceived full octave of low end without sacrificing midrange richness or top-end sparkle.
■For guitar, bass, synth, keyboard, and more
RNDI-M has a uniquely high input headroom of +20.5 dBu, making it compatible with a wide range of sources, from guitar and bass to synths, keyboards, drum machines, and even pre-recorded material. Inject the distinctive Rupert Neve Designs tone into your source through the RNDI-M!
