Have you ever heard of the genre Liquid Funk? Perhaps some of you have heard of it even if you don’t know what kind of music it is. To be brief, liquid funk is a subgenre of drum'n'bass. There are various interpretations, but my personal opinion is that it is characterized by a floating atmosphere, as if ambient elements have been added to drum'n'bass. So let's listen to this kind of genre!
■ Fairbank / Homecoming
Here’s the first track. The sentimental chord melody is in full swing from the beginning, and while the overall atmosphere is airy, the hi-hat sound that punctuates the rhythm is pleasant. Personally, I like the part from 2:55 into the break. Let yourself be swept away by the enchanting atmosphere and go on a trip to your heart's content.
■ Matt View / Nighthawks
The video coupled with this music makes me think of letting out a big breath and feeling as if my breath is going to turn white. This song gives that sort of feeling. The clear rhythms are well mixed with the ambience that envelops the song, and it is soothing to listen to while in a daze. Listening to this song with the stars coming out in the cold night sky makes this song even more relaxing.
■ Millstreet / Gravedigger
The development of this song is fascinating. The melody gradually intensifies and the bass creates the world of the song, giving us a pleasant floating feeling. I personally like the way the rhythm comes in from time to time. You can get more into the world of the song by listening to it in a darkened room with a drink in hand.
■ Monrroe / Days Like These
A wonderful piano melody with a nice delay. Listening to this song makes you feel as if you are staring into the distance with a great sense of floating. As is the case with the songs I introduced so far, including this one, I think that the development and creation of sound allows the listener to see the scenery while listening to the sound, which is an indispensable characteristic of liquid funk. This is the feeling that I get from this music.
■ Painted Skies - No Return
Here is the last track. Hats off to the atmospheric sound that quietly rumbles in the background while creating a sense of floating. It has a shimmering quality, but it also conveys the feeling of looking at a dim light. I actually listened to this outside and I highly recommend it for nighttime driving. Be careful not to drive too fast.
So, how was it? In truth, there are many more songs I would like to introduce, but that will be for another time. For now, I hope this blog has given you some idea as to what kind of music Liquid Funk is. If you like it, try to find your favorite song. So, see you soon.
