[Product Review] Warm Audio WA273-EQ by soki kimura

I’m going to review the WA-273EQ from Warm Audio!

Warm Audio / WA273-EQ

This series is a dual channel mic preamp + EQ!

This time, I’m going to try it on the overhead mic for the drum to see the sound difference between different gains and try it with the audio interface!

Let me say this first...

“This is a must-buy item!”

It was very easy to play and I made some fun sounds!

Test 1

First, let’s listen to the tone with different gain settings on the WA273 alone!
Let’s start with the Tone button on.

★ Result ★

• When you want to add softer dynamics to music, lower the gain.
• When you want to make certain sounds or tones more present in music, increase the gain.

It’s good to be able to make it fit together with the surrounding ensemble!

■ WA273-EQ Gain: 20, (Max. output) Tone: On

■ WA273-EQ Gain: 40, (Output at 11 o’clock) Tone: On

■ WA273-EQ Gain: 50, (Output at 9 o’clock) Tone: On

Test 2

Next, let’s record with the Tone button off.

★ Result ★

The Tone button seems to add various overtones, so please listen carefully to how the tone of the kick changes drastically.
With the Tone button off, the sound is more natural and calm.

Test 3

This is a forbidden test; a comparison with the UAD Apollo x8!

Higher gain often shows differences among models. Let’s compare the WA273-EQ and the Apollo x8 with the gain setting at 50.

First, let’s test out the UAD 1073.

■ UAD Apollo x8 1073 Gain: 50

Now, let’s compare it with the WA273-EQ.

■ WA273-EQ Gain: 50, (Output at 9 o’clock) Tone: Off

Then, turn on the Tone button on the WA273-EQ.

■ WA273-EQ Gain: 50, (Output at 9 o’clock) Tone: On

★ Result ★

The WA273-EQ creates a brighter, flashier sound.
The Apollo x8 creates a calmer, more mature sound.
Both sound good, so I think it is a good idea to use them separately according to the tone you want.

When the WA273-EQ’s Tone button is turned on, the tone color changes considerably.
I thought it would be fun to create a sound with the gain control.

The sound that came back to my ears sounded so strong, which made recording even more fun.

I hope I’ll do some EQ testing in the future!
