Hello! Kaoru the composer here!
This time, I would like to talk about headphone amplifiers for audio, which can dramatically improve your music listening experience!
Headphone amplifiers in the audio world vary widely in price, from affordable ones you can get for tens of thousands of yen to extremely high-end models that cost over a million yen.
This is just my personal opinion, but I believe that expensive doesn’t necessarily mean better– choosing something that fits your own environment is key.
So today, I’ve handpicked some products available at Sound House to introduce to you.
If you’re considering adding one to your setup, I hope you’ll find this helpful!
audio-technica / AT-HA2 Headphone Amplifier
Audio-Technica is a globally popular audio equipment manufacturer that offers this headphone amplifier at an incredibly affordable price of around ¥5,000 (approx. $30–40 USD).
In this price range, it’s considered one of the highest-quality models available.
It features a durable metal chassis and an ultra-compact body (70mm × 30mm × 92mm).
Despite its small size, it supports a wide range of input/output connections, allowing for flexible setups with various audio devices.
With a maximum output of 300mW + 300mW, it provides more than enough power for most home environments.
(It might even bother your neighbors at full volume!)
Even if your AV equipment doesn’t have a headphone jack, this amp allows two headphones to monitor via line output.
That means you can enjoy headphone monitoring with devices like DVD players, VCRs, CD/MD players, and more.
You can also use two headphones at the same time, making it perfect for listening with someone else.
It's an ideal model for those just getting into headphone amps.
FiiO / K3 USB DAC Headphone Amplifier
This compact headphone amp is powered via USB bus, making it perfect for portability.
It supports decoding up to PCM 384kHz/32-bit and native DSD256.
Its simple design allows you to just connect it to a PC via USB cable. It’s great for those who aren’t confident with tech.
Additionally, the gain switch (High/Low) lets you match with a wide range of headphones and enjoy music at your preferred volume.
It’s perfect not only for music listening but also for games, movies, and YouTube.
This is a uniquely shaped, compact desktop DAC (also functions as a USB preamp and headphone amp).
It supports PCM up to 32-bit/384kHz, DXD, DSD256, and MQA rendering.
With iFi Audio's original "TrueBass" feature, you can boost only the low frequencies without affecting the mids by flipping a switch.
This makes it a great match for IEMs (in-ear monitors) or open-back headphones, which often lack bass presence.
This USB DAC supports both recording and playback in DSD (5.6MHz, 2.8MHz) and PCM up to 192kHz/24bit.
Its simple yet futuristic design is really eye-catching.
The unit uses high-end parts specifically selected to achieve the best possible audio quality:
- PCM4202 (by Texas Instruments) for A/D conversion
- OPA1662 (also by TI) in the preamp stage of the phono input
- PMLCAP thin-film polymer capacitors (by Rubycon)
It even has a phono input terminal, allowing you to connect a turntable directly.
In today’s music world, where hi-res audio has become the norm, this is a perfect all-in-one solution.
This headphone amplifier is from Fostex, a long-standing and highly trusted audio equipment manufacturer.
It features a premium black design that gives it a sleek appearance.
With dimensions of 213mm (W) × 78mm (H, including feet) × 315mm (D, including protrusions) and a weight of about 3.8kg, it’s not ideal for portable use.
By using a proprietary USB driver, the unit supports sample rates up to 32-bit / 192kHz,
and it also supports DSD 11.2 MHz (via ASIO).
(*Note: On macOS, DSD playback is supported only up to 5.6 MHz.)
It comes with a built-in SD (SDHC) card drive, allowing for direct playback of DSF, WAV, and AIFF files stored on SD cards, making high-quality music playback easier and more accessible.
By downloading the free proprietary software, Fostex Audio Player, from the official website, you can enjoy high-resolution audio playback even more easily.
This concludes my introduction to headphone amplifiers for audio use.
Even affordable models now support high-res audio, which is truly impressive!
