Hello

Today, I will build a delay sound by combining the BOSS DD-2 and the Electro Harmonix Deluxe Memory Man.
I made a video on YouTube this time as well. I would be happy if you would subscribe to my channel.
First, the BOSS DD-2 is a digital delay, while the Deluxe Memory Man is an analog delay.
○ Delays with different properties
- Digital delay
In general, you can get a clear delay sound, and you can extend the delay time. - Analog delay
The sound is a little muffled and warm, and the delay sound itself is thick. The delay time cannot be lengthened, but there are many interesting things that provide a strong presence and character.
By combining these two delays with different properties, you can create a good guitar sound.
○ What kind of sound was I aiming for?
The sound I aimed for is analog, but with a nostalgic atmosphere, and creates a unique space.
Therefore, I wanted to create a sound mainly with the Deluxe Memory Man, which is an analog delay, and expand the sound with the DD-2 to create the space, so I connected the Deluxe Memory Man first and then the DD-2 behind it.
○ Strengths of the Deluxe Memory Man
The Deluxe Memory Man has chorus and vibrato functions, as well as level control, and its strength is that it can reproduce sounds like tape delay.
Therefore, you can apply a thin chorus or vibrato to create fluctuations, and use level control to create a thick sound that seems to be slightly overloaded.
Personally, I think the level control is also delicious.
Taking advantage of this strength, it shakes the sound while maintaining a thick sound, creating a nostalgic tone.
The Deluxe Memory Man is a delay with good atmosphere, but it is difficult to create a unique space because the delay time is short.
Therefore, we will leave that to the digital delay, which is good at expanding the space and reproducing the sound.
○ Strengths of the Boss DD-2
As I introduced the DD-2 two articles earlier, it is a digital delay, but it also makes me feel it has some analog elements.
For example, even Boss products in recent years have a flat, thin, and too clear sound that can feel cold.
Therefore, I chose the DD-2 because I wanted a digital delay that was not too clear and had a relatively warm feeling.
Of course, there are many good digital delays other than the DD-2, so this is not absolutely necessary.
○ Things to be aware of when combining two delays
The point is that the image of the sound is solidified to some extent, and even if you select two delays unnecessarily and combine them, the result will not be very good, and you will not be sure what you want to do.
If you simply want to get the effect of using two delays, you can easily build a simpler system with less noise by using Eventide Time Factor, Strymon DIG, etc.
It might be a useful way to create your own sound, if you love this kind of sound but also want to use it as a modern delay.
○ Author's general comments
When it comes to delay, some people say that one functional thing is enough, but if you want to create your own sound, or if you have an image in your head and you can't reproduce it with a functional delay, I think it's worth trying other methods.
Personally, I like how it can be used, but as a live system, noise and troubles increase, and I am worried about operability, so I cannot recommend it very much, but it is a method that I would like to make great use of in recording.
