New Product! I tried out the PLAYTECH PEC100BR Electric Cello!

In February 2025, PLAYTECH released the highly anticipated electric cello PEC100BR! I’ve got my hands on this newly released PEC100BR and I’m ready to give it a go!

PLAYTECH PEC100BR Electric Cello

This cello set includes everything a beginner would need: a bow, case, rosin, and cables. It’s especially recommended for those who have never played the cello before. Let’s go over the key features!

Key Feature① Recommended for those concerned about disturbing your neighbors with noise!

In terms of volume, it’s smaller compared to an acoustic cello, making it ideal for those who want to avoid sound leakage. If you live in an apartment, you can also install a cello mute (like the one below) on the bridge to further reduce the volume.

Key Feature② Compact Body!

This electric cello has a foldable chest rest for easy playing, and folding it reduces its size, making it thinner than a traditional acoustic cello. This is a great advantage for storage, as it takes up much less space.

Key Feature③ You can connect it to an amplifier to create your own sound!

The cello has a control box on the back with an output terminal to connect to an amplifier. It also comes with a cable, so once you have your amp ready, you can create various sounds. You can connect it to effects like reverb for a spacious sound, or distortion for a more intense tone. Create your own unique sound! Personally, I love adding reverb for a sound that feels like I’m playing in a large hall. By the way, I used the following product:

Key Feature④ You can also connect headphones and enjoy playing quietly!

The control box mentioned earlier also has a headphone jack. Once you plug in your headphones, you can enjoy playing without disturbing anyone.

Trying Out the Electric Cello

Now it’s time to plug it into the amp and hear it in action! Here’s an overview of the setup:

The dedicated soft case has a pocket for the bow and a shoulder strap on the back.

Here’s a picture showing how the electric cello fits into the case. The two straps in the center of the case help secure the instrument.
I wore it as a backpack, and the instrument stayed secure without moving.

Here’s a close-up of the body. The wood grain is beautifully visible and the finish is immaculate.

The knobs on top control the volume and tone, which can be adjusted freely.
This cello uses a 9V battery.

Playing the Electric Cello through an Amp!

After connecting it to the amp, I was able to play just as well as with an acoustic cello! The sound is clear and produces a rich, cello-like bass.
Also, it’s worth testing the different strings, as changing the cello strings to your preference could be fun. The possibilities with electric instruments are endless, like changing strings or adding your favorite effects.

As for the mute, I tried attaching it to the bridge and found it effectively reduced the volume. Personally, I believe that with the mute on, the risk of sound leakage in apartments or shared housing would be significantly minimized.
