A Yorushika Fan Speaks of the Band’s Many Charms

Do you know Yorushika, a Japanese band that is popular among young people? The band consists of guitarist & composer n-buna and vocalist suis, and as support members, Mitsuyasu Shimotsuru on guitar, Tatsuya Kitani on bass, Masack on drums, and Tetsuya Hirahata on piano.
They have been active since April 2017, and the melody that remains in your ears consists of emotional lyrics and a transparent singing voice is why this band has attracted many listeners and became famous. They often write in a style where they pass the story from one album to another. For example, the concept of their 1st album Moonlight (Japanese title: Dakara Boku wa Ongaku wo Yameta=That’s Why I Gave Up on Music) and its sequel, the 2nd album Elma is; the songs in Moonlight are written by a boy who decided to quit music to Elma, and the songs in Elma are written by Elma who was influenced by letters from the boy in Moonlight. There are also so-called sister songs with similar lyrics and chords, and if you listen to them together, you will be pulled deeper into their world.

■”Moonlight” (Japanese title: Dakara Boku wa Ongaku wo Yameta=That’s Why I Gave Up on Music)

This is the title song of the 1st album. It’s a shocking title. It’s about how the boy who is the main character quit music. As the lyrics say, “The piano that I should have quit, I can’t get rid of the habit of imitating playing piano on the desk,” the piano plays out in this song. The piano part of the interlude is so cool!

■ ”Nautilus”

This is the last track of the 2nd album. The mood is quite different from “Moonlight”. The lyrics convey Elma’s feelings for the boy. It flows smoothly into your heart, yet a slightly sad melody remains in your mind. When I first heard it, I was surprised at suis’s singing ability.

suis’s singing voice is so excellent...!! Performing in the aquarium, which can only be done through live stream, deepens Yorushika’s fantastic view of the world. The song “Spring Thief” was revealed and performed for the first time, and I got goosebumps with excitement when I listened to it through live stream. I think you might have heard it in a TV commercial. It’s a song that compares falling cherry blossom petals to human life. You will be impressed by the pink light that shines on the fish and makes it look like a flurry of cherry blossom petals!
