I as a guitarist wrote an article on the theme of metal drummers that I like, and I didn't know if it would be successful, but this is the second all the same!
Last time, half of the drummers were speed metal drummers, so this time I’ll talk about some more extreme elements!!
■Francesco Paoli（Fleshgod Apocalypse）/ The Violation
Drummer of Italian technical death metal band Fleshgod Apocalypse. When the band was formed, he was a guitarist/vocalist, but he changed to drummer because he was in charge of arranging many drum parts. After that, with the withdrawal of the frontman of the band, he became in charge of guitars and vocals on the stage and drums in the studio, and he is a drummer with a unique itinerary.
For me, he's also a Tech Death introductory drummer.
■Joey Jordison（ex-Slipknot）/ People=Shit
Former drummer of masked metal band Slipknot. The drummer, who is described as "a man of many hits and powerful" in the extreme metal area, is scary, but Joey's playing also gives the impression that he is trying intensely to "kill".
The signature snare released by Pearl is 13 inches x 6.5 inches, which is a slightly different size, but many drummers love it, and it can be said that it has had a great influence on the sound as well as the playing.
■George Kollias（Nile, Solo）/ Shall Rise Shall Be Dead
A drummer who works as a technical death metal band Nile and also works solo on the side, as well as a music instructor. Known for his ultra-fast double bass play, when I first saw the performance, his strange leg movements made me laugh.
When listening to a drummer phrase created by programming, I sometimes think "humans can't play double bass at such a fast tempo!" But when I saw George Kollias, I think "Oh, it can be done with human power." In a good way, he is a drummer who is far from human.
■Peter Wildore（Darkane, James LaBrie） / One More Time
A drummer known for his activities in the melodic death metal band Darkane and his participation in Arch Enemy's 2nd album "STIGMATA". He participated in the Dream Theater drummer audition in 2010, and perhaps that was the reason why he was in charge of drums for the solo work of vocalist James LaBrie. The extreme and amazing performance that involves cymbals such as splashes and bells in speed play is impressive. After all, the drummer who plays a lot of cymbals is a very important point for me personally.
I introduced the above 4 drummers, extreme metal drummers that I like as a metal guitarist. Drummers in this genre make me think, "These people are athletes having come this far," even from the perspective of the metal lover. But this is good. As long as there are sounds that can only be expressed at this speed, metal players will continue to be extremely fast.
It's the same not only for drummers but also for guitarists. Next year in 2021, I would like to practice with the slogan "The fast guy is great".
