One of Warm Audio’s most attractive features is their ability to balance good pricing and quality.
I myself use the WA73-EQ mic preamp on a regular basis.
As a drummer and percussionist, small diaphragm stereo pair microphones are what we always use for recording, live performances, and other settings.
In this article, I’m going to explore this WA-84 from my perspective as a musician and a songwriter.

This time, I tested the WA-84 at home as an overhead mic and a close mic for percussion and drums, and for recording acoustic guitar, which is not included in the videos.
I wanted to keep the recording sounding as raw as possible, so I did not use any outboards, but I connected the WA-84 directly into the interface (Babyface Pro FS).

The first thing I felt through recording drums, percussion, guitar, and the entire recording was “The WA-84 can capture the atmosphere of the place where the recording is done.”
The sound of the performance can be recorded as is without any coloration, so I have the impression that the recording place is being reproduced in my ears.
This can be very useful for acoustic sessions.
This is probably the part where the WA-84’s transformer contributes.
In recording, if there is a discrepancy between the sound the performer hears during the recording and the recorded microphone sound, the musician may feel uncomfortable. I think that not having this discomfort can be the key factor to creating a good take.
The high range is recorded gently and neatly, even at the point where other microphones would stand out too much and create a painful tone.
The mid and low are also recorded densely and richly. Similarly, the frequencies that would seem too fat or poor with other microphones are well balanced with the WA-84.
I have the impression that the WA-84 covers the entire range from bottom to top perfectly.
If I were to use this microphone for music production at home, I would use it not only as an overhead mic for drums and percussion, but also for wind chimes, shakers, tambourines, and acoustic guitar.
The realistic sound of this microphone gives the tracks a more convincing sound.
This is what I felt when I recorded the raw sound just by connecting the WA-84 directly to the interface without any EQ or plug-ins, so if I set up the recording system more properly, the WA-84 will show off its true value even more.
It’s a good idea to have a small diaphragm condenser microphone that can record warm and realistic sound.
