~How to Choose a Capacitor~
A capacitor is a simple electronic component consisting of two electrodes sandwiching an electrically non-conductive insulator. When used with a guitar or bass, it adjusts how much of the high-frequency signal is dropped to ground when the tone control is operated (i.e., how muffled or mellow the sound is).
The effectiveness of a capacitor is measured in μF (microfarads), a unit of capacitance that can accept the incoming signal.
The larger the capacitance (μF/microfarad), the wider the range of frequencies that can be dropped to ground, resulting in a muffled, mellow sound.
For example, if a 0.022μF capacitor is currently installed, and you want a more mellow sound, you would choose a larger capacitance such as 0.047μF or 0.1μF. If you want a more gradual tone response, choosing a lower capacitance, such as 0.01μF, will help you get closer to your ideal sound.
Typically, 0.047μF (sometimes written as 473) is used for the tone of guitar single-coil pickups, while 0.022μF (sometimes written as 223) is used for humbucking and bass pickups.
