Never shift⁈ How to hold a pick [Things guitarists should know about their body]

Hello!
My name is Takuto Fujioka, a guitarist who can see your posture!

As the title says today, I'm going to focus on the muscles of the thumb to see how to hold a pick that will never shift!

I think there are two reasons why the picks are out of alignment:(1) the power to hold the pick is too weak, and (2) the place where the power is put is wrong.

You don't need that much force to hold the pick, but the stronger the stroke momentum and the greater the resistance to the pick, such as quick cutting, the more the pick will shift if you don't hold it firmly.
However, if you use the wrong force, the thumb will bend and the angle of the pick will change, which will increase the resistance applied to the pick and cause the pick to shift.

Now, let's see what muscles are used and how to hold them so that the picks will not shift!

The point is the thumb.
The thumb can be moved in all directions, which gives it a lot of muscle. It is important to know how to apply the force required to hold the pick, as the way the thumb moves will naturally change if the force is applied differently.

Let's consider it while looking at a hand actually holding a pick!

You hold the pick between your thumb and forefinger.
In kinematics, the movement of pinching with the belly of the thumb and the side of the index finger is called the "lateral pinch". The muscle that works during this movement is the base of the thumb, called the thumb ball. (The thumb ball is the part with a red circle and the part that bulges. There are many muscles that move the thumb here.)
Therefore, when holding a pick, if you put a force around the ball of the thumb and have the image of pinching the pick from the base of the finger, there is no wasted force and it is possible to hold it stably with the minimum necessary force.

Also, with this way of holding the pick, it is hard to change the angle, and as you can see in the picture, I think the pick is parallel to the thumb. In this state, picking can be performed in parallel with the strings, so the resistance applied to the pick can be minimized and the pick can be prevented from shifting.

If you are aware of the above, I think you can solve problems ① and ② mentioned at the beginning!

By the way, if you hold the pick while being conscious of putting pressure on your fingertips, it will look like this.

You can see that the pick is angled by bending the thumb. I think that the ease of putting effort and holding is different just because the place where you turn your consciousness is different.

What did you think!
I think this is a point that many guitarists have been concerned about with the "phenomenon of pick misalignment". What I talked about this time is maniacal, but if you consider not only how to hold the pick but also how to put it in and where to put it in, you can lessen unnecessary power that you don't really need to use. Please try to incorporate it into your daily performance ( ^ω^ )
Also, if you think this way of holding the pick is off, please let me know.
