This treble booster is ideal for boosting tube amps. It produces a thick, sparkling lead tone reminiscent of guitarists of the past. Its precise response to guitar volume adjustments and picking nuances is appealing. It produces a wonderful effect when combined with a crunch-inducing vintage amp.

■It's no secret that the treble booster plays an important role in Brian May's unique sound. Brian May connected his treble booster to the normal channel of his VOX AC30. With his early Queen, Brian May used a British Rangemaster germanium treble booster, manufactured from 1965 to 1969. The BSM RM perfectly recreates that booster. Then, in mid-period Queen, he switched to a silicon transistor design for a more bite-filled sound. Now, the BM-Q faithfully recreates the treble booster that was key to Brian May's mid-period Queen sound.
The BM-Q is designed for guitars with relatively low- to medium-inductance pickups (such as Fender, Gibson, Barnes, and Gretsch). When using the BM-Q with a guitar equipped with such pickups, turning the guitar's volume control up produces a thick, bitey lead tone that cuts out harsh tones. Turning the guitar's volume down produces a crunch tone with varying amounts of distortion depending on the volume. Also, when the amp volume is turned up (to the point of distortion and saturation), the high frequencies are lost and the sound becomes loose, but using the BM-Q produces a sound that is more faithful to the guitar. As a result, there is little need for the amp's presence control.
