The KENTON Electronics GPMX-16 is a GPI to MIDI/MIDI to GPI converter with four 9-pin D-Sub connectors, 16 GPI (General Purpose Interface) input ports and 16 GPI output ports, each with a 9-pin D-Sub plug.
The KENTON Electronics GPMX-16 (GPMX16) is a GPI to MIDI/MIDI to GPI converter with four 9-pin D-Sub connectors, 16 GPI (General Purpose Interface) input ports and 16 GPI input signals can be converted to MIDI information (selected from Note, Control Change_CC, Program Change_PC) and vice versa. The following description uses MIDI note numbers. The following description refers to the setting by MIDI note number, but the control change number and program change number will be applied according to the selected output mode.
Example of use
Provide a large, colorful pushbutton switch for games to sound a MIDI sound source and change tones.
Simple control of MIDI (DMX) compatible lighting in small facilities or theaters.
Create sound installations using sensors and switches.
Use MIDI information to drive other electronic devices such as relays and lighting.
The highly reliable and robust housing and versatile use of the GPI and MIDI standards allow for integration into a wide variety of facilities and equipment.
Example of GPI input port usage (default setting)
Connect 8 buttons (switches) to the GPI 1-8 IN and GPI 9-16 IN sockets, respectively. In the default configuration, MIDI note numbers 36-43 and 44-51 are assigned to these buttons on MIDI channel 1. When any button is pressed, the corresponding MIDI note information is sent from the GPIM-16 to play an external MIDI sound source. The MIDI information can be selected from Note, Controller, or Program Change.
GPI OUT port usage example 1 (default setting)
Connect 8 resistors, 8 LEDs, and a +5VDC power supply to the GPI 1-8 OUT and GPI 9-16 OUT plugs respectively. When any MIDI note information is sent from an external MIDI controller on MIDI channel 2 from MIDI note numbers 36-43 and 44-51, the corresponding LEDs will light up.
Additional GPI input port / GPI output port via daisy-chain connection
Up to 32 GPI input port switches or GPI output port circuits can be connected by daisy-chaining two units. Similarly, a large system can be constructed by adding three units with 48 or four units/64 GPI input/output ports without limit.
Other Features
The GPMX-16 is a GPI to MIDI / MIDI to GPI converter with four 9-pin D-Sub connectors.
It has 16 GPI (General Purpose Interface) inputs and 16 GPI outputs with D-Sub sockets for inputs and D-Sub plugs for outputs.
Each block with eight GPI input ports can be assigned a reference MIDI note number as the first; the second~8th are automatically assigned consecutive note numbers. (By default, the first block is set to 36-43 and the second to 44-51.)
MIDI channels can be set individually for input and output (default: transmit = ch1, receive = ch2).
A debounce value can be set to eliminate chattering of switches connected to the GPI input port (range: 1 to 100 mS, default: 10 mS).
The GPI input port is pulled up internally and the appropriate MIDI note-on message is sent when the input and ground are connected. Releasing the connection to ground will send a note-off message unless the setting is disabled.
The GPI output port can output pulses of any length (default) or the length of the pulse can be controlled by a MIDI on/off message.
The GPI output port is floating and can switch loads with a voltage of 50 V max and a current capacity of 100 mA max (not rms rms).
The GPI output port (9-pin D-Sub plug) is arranged with pins 1-8 as outputs 1-8 (or 9-16) and pin 9 as the common (common) pin.
The common terminal on pin 9 of the GPI output port can be used either positively or negatively with respect to pins 1-8.
The GPMX-16 has two MIDI out pins, both of which transmit the same MIDI information; the MIDI information received at the MIDI in pin is merged with the MIDI information generated by the switch state of the GPI input port and sent to the MIDI out pin.
A universal switching power supply is included with this unit. *Note: For convenience of distribution in Japan, a DC jack with a lock is included as a component. Use at your own discretion.
Parameter editing is performed using a combination of LED display and push buttons.
Settings are stored in nonvolatile memory. To prevent accidental changes to the settings, editing is performed using the recessed push-buttons in edit mode only.
MIDI Analyzer Mode
The GPIM-16 also offers a MIDI analyzer mode. In this mode, you can check the MIDI information output from the master keyboard or sequencer, making the GPIM-16 a very useful MIDI diagnostic Tool Contents.
It can display a variety of information such as MIDI note numbers, velocity, control changes, program changes, MIDI channels and their values, etc.
