■The bridge model is wound to produce a sharper sound than the neck model, and you can open the throttle when you need it. When Paul wants a spunky sound with a compressor, he turns off all distortion pedals and uses a flanger pedal. Although it is a bridge pickup, it is not too high-pitched and has a warm sound.
■The PG-13 mini humbucker is a pickup designed by DiMarzio for Paul Gilbert, the guitarist of MR. BIG, who has great musicianship, amazing speed playing and outstanding technique.
The tone of the mini humbucker is somewhere between a full-size humbucker and a single coil. Paul says that the main feature of this pickup is the good sound projection. ""It's still massive and thick enough, but not harsh. So you just plug your guitar into an amp and think, 'Oh, this is good.'""
Compared to a full-size humbucker, the mini humbucker has a distinctly different tone. The mini humbucker captures the shorter string vibrations, the lower harmonics are clearer, and the tone is brighter. MR. BIG is a band with a wide range of musicality, from acoustic ballads to heavy tunes, fast songs, and bluesy songs. Paul needs a pickup that can handle all songs.
The DP242 neck model has a slightly fatter and creamier tone than the DP243 bridge model, making it ideal for jazz and blues solos. The low output and small size do not cause any muddiness in the sound.
The DP243 bridge model has a great balance of clarity, resonance and richness that is never harsh. Even when turned up with a loud amp, it maintains a full and wonderful harmonics. Playing power chords produces a strong impact but also a pleasant sound. The combination of the neck model and the bridge model is also excellent, and using them together produces a wide sound. The PG-13? is a pickup that can be used not only for blues and classic rock, but also for modern metal.
