<> The Epoch Boost needs little introduction. It's the Epoch Boost version of the Echoplex EP-3 preamp, featuring crystal-clear tonal enhancement with all the funky output filtering and supply voltage that gave the original tape unit its unique flavor.
Adding a boost gives you the kick you need, while leaving the control at zero delivers pure Echoplex tone. This is our exceptional, always-on device, powered by the original 22V operating voltage and delivering high-headroom punch for great sound anywhere.
Have you ever heard the rumor? Some of the greatest tones in rock and roll were achieved without pedals.
But that's not quite true! While technically true, some of the most revered guitar gods relied on old tape echo units to achieve their legendary tones. This unit was the Maestro Echoplex EP-3. Some guitarists made great use of its echo effect, while others brought it to every gig just for its magical preamp. This preamp circuit was hardwired always-on, so even when used as an echo effect, the preamp circuit still provided significant sonic enhancement.
■Controls
PREAMP: Fewer than 500 of the original EP-3 were produced, so many people may never have experienced the sweep of this control. But let me explain a bit. The Preamp control isn't a standard volume control; it pans two different signal paths (the combined preamp and mixer circuit, and something similar but different). The result is a volume control in the first half, and a basic frequency enhancement in the second half. Turning the Preamp control above 12 o'clock gently pushes different frequency bands, with the loudest peak perceived around 2 and 3 o'clock. Think of it as a pickup selector control, or a very unique EQ control.
Boost: While the Preamp knob and associated circuitry create the sonic magic, the Boost control adds another layer of versatility. At full counterclockwise, the signal is at unity gain (added to the Preamp knob setting) and no boost occurs. Turning up the Boost control sets the preamp gain level, dramatically increasing sparkle and volume to rival even the most stubborn amplifiers. Set your amp to its limits and adjust the BOOST control to your liking to bring even the most sterile gear to life.
Epoch Boost requires a 9VDC power supply (center negative). However, due to the charge pump circuitry, do not operate Epoch Boost at voltages above 9V. This may void the warranty and cause other issues.
