■Innovative and unique old design
The first oil-can echo was developed by Tel-Rey in 1959. Instead of tape, it used a small rotating can filled with conductive oil as a dielectric to create repeating sounds. This innovative approach produced a sound completely different from that heard with tape machines, instantly transporting listeners to a darker, more murky world of vibes.
The vast array of variables in the original design made faithful emulation extremely challenging, requiring further research and entirely new algorithms to achieve the desired realism. We believe Olivera captures the spirit of the original, from dark repeats with distinctive rhythmic and decay characteristics to surreal, thick modulation that evolves and morphs with the sound's movements. We believe no other delay can replicate the oil can delay, and no pedal emulation comes close to Olivera.
■ Vintage Stereo Echo Enhanced with Modern Features
Olivera offers a host of powerful features that make it easy to incorporate these nostalgic sounds into modern rigs. Discrete stereo operation allows independent processing of left and right stereo inputs, a simple control set and expression pedal, and multi-switch functionality. Delay spillover maintains repeats even when the pedal is off. A discrete Class-A JFET stereo input preamp provides exceptional touch sensitivity and ideal frequency response. MIDI control for patch recall and continuous controller data. Featuring premium components, durable, rugged construction, and a USB jack for firmware updates and computer control, the Olivera easily adapts to modern specifications.
What is an Oil Can Echo?
Vintage oil can echo units are electromechanical units that charge a rotating metal can with static electricity. Oil is used as a lubricant to maintain the can's charge. The resulting delayed signal has a very limited bandwidth, producing a muddy-sounding echo. But the unique atmosphere of an oil can echo goes beyond that.
Oil Can Echo Structure
These units have a record head and usually two playback heads, but typically no erase head. As a result, some residual charge remains as the cans rotate, giving the system two unique characteristics.
First, they generate playback repeats even when there's no feedback (REGEN) from the playback head. Because electrostatic charge has its own decay time constant, echo ""repeats"" will always occur, regardless of the setting.
Second, they generate an uneven rhythm in the echo playback rhythm. The first echo occurs over the distance from the record head to the playback head, while subsequent echoes occur at the rotational speed of the system as the dissipated signal returns. The resulting uneven delayed rhythm is a major factor in creating a unique atmosphere, despite the lack of a strong ""rhythmic"" element.
Adding feedback from the playback head (REGEN) or combining the output of two heads can increase the echo ambience.
