The LWP Series Purple Humper Solder Free Pedal Kit is a kit for building a mid-boost pedal with a unique texture, which is one of the few BJFE pedals produced.
No soldering is required, and it can be easily built using only a Phillips screwdriver and the included tools. This kit is perfect for learning the basics of pedal construction and experimenting with pedal construction.
A center-negative DC 9V adapter is required for power. Batteries cannot be used.
●Purple Humper
Who, world, can you solve this mystery?
The midrange is considered the most important part of guitar sound.
In particular, as distortion caused by overloading amplifiers began to be used in guitar sounds and became more familiar, mechanisms that emphasized the midrange naturally began to be used.
In the 1960s, some British amplifiers had built-in mid-boosters. This sound was later passed down as the sound of foot-controlled wah pedals.
Many historic mid-boost effects were also created, and legendary overdrive pedals from the 1970s are also known for their mid-range-enhancing characteristics.
The BJFE Purple Humper was created in response to requests for a pedal based on the mid-boost circuit originally found in Stratocasters that could be used with a variety of guitars.
It was developed to equalize the output of a '60s Stratocaster with that of a '60s ES-335, with adjustments made to accommodate a variety of pickups. A very limited production run was actually produced. This is one of the legendary BJFE pedals.
At One Control, we focused on the tone of this pedal.
While there are many pedals that boost the midrange, the Purple Humper's tone is neither an overdrive nor a half-stop wah pedal, and it's also different from many mid-boosters.
What we found here was not a mid-boost that was too mid-heavy and muddy, but rather a superb high-output amp tone that didn't disrupt the guitar's tonal balance and exuded a distinctly British flavor.
For example, it instantly transforms a clean transistor amp with a less three-dimensional tone into a vintage sound with a British flair. The essence of the Purple Humper is its superb clean tone that you'll want to play forever.
The Purple Humper is also effective when used with distorted amp settings or in combination with other distortion effects. When combined with a distortion effect, it creates a realistic, lustrous, and smooth guitar sound while maintaining the original distortion characteristics.
The Purple Humper's frequency range is specifically tailored to a variety of songs that require distortion.
Depending on the BLEND knob position and the guitar/amp combination, you can transform a harsh transistor amp clean into a lustrous British sound, turn a Stratocaster's bridge pickup into the sound of a hollowbody neck pickup, create '80s metal lead tones, or achieve heavier distortion with single coils.
The Purple Humper is also ideal for compensating amps and pedals, especially for players seeking a British-style tone.
If you have to use the built-in amp at a live music venue or studio, incorporating the Purple Humper into your pedalboard will allow you to tailor your tone to the style of a vintage British amp, while also allowing for fine-tuning.
We've tested it with not only single coils, but also humbuckers, P-90 pickups, and even active pickups, ensuring you can find the sweet spot with any pickup.
Why is the Purple Humper so controllable?
Of course, the dynamic range and British characteristics of its tone are at the heart of its versatility, but the single BLEND control also plays an important role in its high operability.
The BLEND control panoramics the buffered input signal and boost signal.
At its minimum setting, it barely changes the tone, while simultaneously producing the warm, BJF-specific buffered sound. At full volume, it provides a powerful midrange boost, boosting the input signal by 8 times, or approximately +15dB.
Although the boost level is high, the Purple Humper's characteristics mean that the volume doesn't become too high audibly, so even when used in combination with other distortion effects, you can use the entire knob range without the sound breaking up.
Like many boosters, when using the Purple Humper in conjunction with a distortion effect, the order in which you connect them can have a completely different effect.
While you can use any order, if you're using the Purple Humper for the first time, it's often best to first create a clean sound and then consider the order in which you connect it.
First, set the BLEND knob to create the clean tone that's most comfortable for your guitar and amp.
Next, if the BLEND knob is set to the left of center, try connecting the distortion effect before the Purple Humper; if it's set to the right, try connecting the distortion effect after the Purple Humper.
In many cases, the Purple Humper will add a more British sound while retaining the tone of your familiar distortion effect.
Experiment further and find your own settings. It can be left on like a preamp, and is ideal as a lead booster or to tone down an overly bright amp.
