Pipa is a unique vocal synth among the many plug-ins on the market. While it is inspired by the expression and flexibility of the human voice, it is not intended to encompass all aspects of the actual voice. Instead, the focus is on an organic, musical sound that allows the user to control formants and dynamics seamlessly.

The synth engine is a crossover between a wavetable synthesizer and a granulation synthesizer, making it a highly expressive and playable instrument. Instead of using regular samples or processing oscillators with formant filters, Pipa uses an extensive database of thousands of wavetables extracted from actual vocal samples. The advantage of the method used here is the ability to morph seamlessly between wavetables using appropriate phase adjustments. This allows Pipa to continuously transition between pitch, formants, and dynamics, which is very useful in the context of music production.
