Another grand entry in Cinesamples' Artist Series, Randy's Prepared Piano, was recorded on the legendary MGM Scoring Stage at Sony Pictures Studios in Los Angeles and the Hollywood Scoring Studios. It is a collection of three pianos recorded at the Stage. It includes various extended techniques used by Los Angeles studio musician Randy Carver.
Several years ago, during a recording session at The Bridge, Randy Kerber (piano, Randy's celeste) and Amy Tatum (flute) recorded the spacious piano duet "Nami's Theme." During one of the breaks, Randy began playing with the museum putty on the piano, giving the instrument a delicate, masked, and underwater tone. This was such a clever and unusual sound that I decided to create a piano solo in the middle of the duet that was completely independent of Randy's prepared piano technique.
We always talked about recording a sample library of these sounds, and this year, we finally got around to it. Randy is a master of film music, known for his sensitivity and tone. He currently focuses on composing music, but we were able to get him to visit our studio for this project. The sounds recorded are as follows.
Striking the strings with rubber mallets
Strings muted by fingers
A 10 JPY coin placed between strings
Putty to make harmonics
Finger harmonics
Light chains on the strings
Metal rods placed between strings
Ping-pong balls placed on the strings
Striking with a crossbar
∙ String zingers (rubbing the strings).
Many dual piano samples.
Enjoy his very unique perspective on the cinematic prepared piano.
