Another great addition to the Cinesamples Artist Series, Randy's Prepared Piano is a collection of three pianos recorded at the legendary MGM Scoring Stage and Hollywood Scoring Studios Stage at Sony Pictures Studios in Los Angeles. It features a variety of extended techniques used by Los Angeles studio musician Randy Carver.
A few years ago, during a recording session at The Bridge, I recorded the spacious piano duet ""Nami's Theme"" by Randy Kerber (piano, Randy's celeste) and Amy Tatum (flute). During one break, Randy started playing with museum putty in the piano, giving the instrument a delicate, masked, and underwater sound. It was such an ingenious and unusual sound that in the middle of the duet, we decided to create a piano solo that was completely independent of Randy's prepared piano technique.
We had always talked about recording a sample library of sounds like this, and this year we finally got around to it. Randy is a master of film music, known for his sensitivity and tone. Although he now focuses on composition, we were able to invite him into the studio for this project. The sounds we recorded were:
・Strings struck with a rubber mallet
・Strings muted with fingers
・10 yen coin placed between strings
・Putty for harmonics
・Finger harmonics
・Light chain on strings
・Metal rod placed between strings
・Ping pong ball placed on strings
・Strike with crossbar
・String zinger (rubbing strings).
- Many dual piano samples
Enjoy his unique perspective on cinematic prepared piano.
