The gain circuit amplifies the input guitar signal by up to approximately 5000 times, generating intensely saturated distortion. The ""insane"" control changes the character of the distortion, providing a unique feel. As you turn up the knob, the distortion waveform changes. At a certain point around 12 o'clock, the sustain and noise decrease, transforming the tone into a gated, crackling sound. While pedals with high gain in their internal circuits tend to amplify the noise contained within the original sound, the ""insane"" effect reduces noise to nearly zero. You'll be shocked to hear that, even at high distortion levels, the noise is lower than when bypassed. It can be powered by batteries or an AC adapter.
