RADIAL / SW8

The RADIAL SW8 MK2 auto switcher allows you to route either of two groups of eight inputs to eight outputs. Inputs are connected via eight-channel D-Sub 25-pin terminals or 1/4"" TRS terminals. Outputs are eight-channel D-Sub 25-pin terminals or transformer-isolated microphone-level XLR. It features three switching modes: manual, remote, and automatic, making it suitable for a wide range of uses.

■The classic SW8 auto switcher has evolved into the MK2.
The SW8 auto switcher, which supports professional stages around the world, including those of U2, Lady Gaga, The Eagles, Radiohead, and Cirque Du Soleil, has now evolved into the MK2. The SW8 MK2 is an 8-channel switcher designed for live concerts, primarily for use on stages using backing tracks. In the event of a problem with the main playback machine connected to the SW8 MK2, the switch can switch to the backup machine automatically, manually, or via remote control.

■Inputs and Outputs
The SW8 MK2 has two groups of eight inputs, and either group can be routed to eight outputs. Inputs are connected via standard 8-channel 25-pin D-Sub connectors or 1/4"" TRS connectors. Outputs are connected via 8-channel 25-pin D-Sub (balanced, line level) or transformer-isolated mic-level XLR outputs. Many engineers use the D-Sub outputs to feed a playback system for monitoring, and the front-panel mic-level XLR outputs to connect a mic splitter or PA snake system.

Three Modes
The SW8 MK2 offers three switching modes: Manual, Remote, and Automatic. The mode you choose depends on your preference and experience. Some engineers prefer to run two computers separately, so that if one fails, the other can cover for them. They start both laptops simultaneously and manually switch over if a problem occurs. Others prefer to synchronize both devices with timecode and automate the process. In this case, if the master playback system fails, the SW8 MK2 automatically switches to the backup system.
