An 8-voice acoustic synthesizer that blends the rich sounds of the physical world with precise electronic control. Thanks to Korg’s latest acoustic synthesis technology, the phase8 doesn’t just “play” sounds—it weaves their expression through touch. It’s an organic instrument that responds vividly in your hands, reacting to the performer’s movements and vibrations.
○ Sounds Created by Touch Through Acoustic Synthesis
Acoustic synthesis is a sound-generation method that uses physically vibrating objects as sound sources and combines them with the electronic control unique to synthesizers.
Touching, shaking, and resonating—such physical interactions and acoustic feedback directly manifest as the sound’s expression.
This approach transcends the “analog vs. digital” dichotomy and even goes beyond the very concept of an electronic instrument.
Eight independently vibrating sound units form the core of phase8’s acoustic sound.
○ Interchangeable and Tunable Steel Resonators
phase8 comes with 13 chromatically tuned metal steel resonators, of which any 8 can be mounted on the main unit for use.
Envelope control allows for a wide range of expression, from sharp, percussive sounds to sustained notes with long decay.
The resonators are easy to swap and adjust, allowing you to reconfigure the scale and tonal character to suit your preferences.
○ Polymetric Rhythm Sequencer
The intuitive sequencer supports both step input and unquantized real-time recording.
You can set step skips for each voice, enabling the creation of complex, organic polymetric patterns.
Sequences can be saved and recalled using 8 memory slots.
○ Modulation Modes
The phase8 features three types of modulation.
In addition to tremolo, you can choose from two types of audio-rate modulation that respond to pitch. In AM Polyphonic Modulation mode, you can add harmonic fluctuations that closely follow each individual note’s pitch.
○ Trigger Delay
Using the Shift knob, you can apply tempo-synced trigger delay to each resonator. The slight delay in the attack of the sound adds depth and fluctuation to the rhythm.
○ Parameter Automation
Every action on the panel can be recorded into a sequence using the recording function.
The movement of the knobs itself becomes part of the performance.
○ Real-time Sound Changes Through Touch
phase8 goes beyond mere parameter control—the physical act of touching the unit itself becomes part of the performance.
Touch, pluck, tap, or rub.
You can even add objects to explore unknown textures.
The AIR slider allows you to control whether to emphasize or suppress the vibration and resonance of whatever you’re touching.
○ Flexible integration with external devices
Via MIDI/USB-MIDI and CV inputs, you can control the knobs and parameters from external devices. It also supports tempo synchronization via MIDI, USB-MIDI, and Sync.
You can play phase8 using external MIDI devices, or conversely, trigger external sound sources using phase8’s sequencer.
Thanks to this connectivity, phase8 integrates seamlessly into any creative environment.
