Sofia is a fully analog voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) designed based on its own waveform generation principle. Centered around a modern, temperature-compensated triangle core calibrated with high precision, it features two advanced wave-shaping and modulation sections.

The sound features a unique character, combining a warm, saturated fundamental tone with two overlapping ripple components. In addition to the main output, it provides individual outputs for each element composing the sound. Combined with its extensive modulation inputs, this enables self-patching and dynamic waveform animation.

Operating Principle
Sofia employs a structure that implements and advances FOF (fonction d’onde formantique) synthesis, a classic computer music technique developed for formant sound synthesis. FOF generates desired spectral characteristics by combining simple time-domain elements, such as decaying sine waves.
In Sofia, two ripple elements are added atop a slightly saturated sine-wave-like fundamental tone. A new pair of ripples is generated for each cycle of the bass tone, with their density and decay rate adjustable over a wide range. Furthermore, the ripple density can be warped to accelerate or decelerate within a cycle. Switching the fundamental waveform from a sine-like shape to a square-like shape adds richer harmonic content.
While the signal may appear to contain seemingly disparate frequency components, all elements are phase-aligned with the core tone and wave-shaped accordingly, ensuring the output remains strictly harmonic. Consequently, while Sofia is not a complex oscillator in the Buchla sense, it enables sound design beyond conventional fundamental waveforms and wavetables, a characteristic reflected in its name.
