With a history spanning over 2,000 years, the guzheng is one of China's most beautiful and revered traditional instruments. This Chinese plucked instrument, with 21 strings and a movable bridge, is known for its unique playing style, including pitch ornamentation and tremolo techniques. Created by Zhang Jian of the China Conservatory of Music and Ma Jing of ADSH in collaboration with Engine Audio, Yellow River Sound's ""GU ZHENG"" is a testament to the dedication of local music producers with a deep understanding of cultural heritage and a passion for conveying the essence of this Chinese instrument.

■Concept

Resonance
The guzheng is an open-string instrument, and when one string is plucked, vibrations are transmitted to multiple strings. To effectively sample the keyboard, we sampled the standard tuning of the guzheng: D pentatonic, E♭ pentatonic, and finally the remaining two notes, covering all 12 notes. The most authentic sound was achieved in D pentatonic thanks to the correct resonance.

One-Shot Sample
To record the open string sounds, we used one-shot playback. This is commonly used with drum samples, where the note continues to play until it decays naturally, ignoring note-off messages. The decay of guzheng strings is longer than that of drum sounds, making it difficult to hide noise. Therefore, we strived to make the samples as clean as possible.

Initial Delay
Guzheng players pluck the strings with ""plectrums"" attached to their fingers. When a string is plucked, an attack sound occurs before the string reaches its maximum vibration level. Because the sustained note, the main articulation of the guzheng, has a distinct attack, we retained a delay for the sustain of the main articulation to create a more realistic playing experience. The delay is up to 30 ms, but it varies depending on the string speed and the performer. The bend articulation does not have such a delay.
