Noise is generated when a material is stimulated by some kind of energy input (hitting, scraping, blowing, etc.). The nature of the sound, timbre, frequency, and duration are determined by the resonant properties of the material (wood, metal, glass, drums, trumpets, etc.) and the method of stimulation. The Rings module from French Eurorack pioneer Mutable Instruments is themed around this thrilling world of stimulation and resonance.
Now, Rings can finally be used with Softube Modular!

Rings uses tuned filters to physically model the resonance of almost any imaginable material, broadly divided into three types:

Modal resonators emulate the resonant properties of plates, strings, membranes, and tubes, amplifying the energy added to the material by concentrating specific frequency bands of sound around specific physical locations (modes) based on their size, shape, and structure.

The sympathetic string model captures the drones and overtones of instruments like the sitar, using virtual strings that resonate with the main note rather than being plucked.

The modulated/dissonant string model extends Karplus-Strong synthesis, using short delays with very high feedback frequencies to synthesize pitched waveforms reminiscent of strings being struck, scraped, or plucked.

In addition to these fascinating and deep modeling capabilities, Rings also provides timbre control over the synthesized sounds. You can also initially choose to drive the resonator model using either internally generated noise or an external audio signal.

What's more, the onboard polyphony mechanism allows you to create chords, similar to strumming a guitar. This generates a new virtual string (up to four in total) with each trigger, even while the last note is sounding.

The range of noises that can be generated with Rings is enormous, so experiment with different sources—you'll never get bored.
