In the world of modular synthesizers, there are some awe-inspiring brands like Moog, Buchler, Doepfer, and Serge.
On the other hand, there are brands that evoke such joy and excitement that it overflows into your hallway and far exceeds your room's capacity.
Mutable Instruments has been creating Eurorack modules that fall into this latter category for nearly a decade.
Their Clouds hardware, a modular system for creating sonic textures, remains a firm favorite among enthusiasts worldwide. Now, Clouds is available for use with Modular.
As a digital module, Clouds hides depth behind every control, and exploring its limitations and possibilities is an adventure in itself.
Using Clouds, you can turn an input drum loop into a sudden, trippy break, or freeze the buffer and use it like a one-shot sampler, manipulating the same chunk of sound indefinitely.
Using an external oscillator, you can quickly freeze and unfreeze the audio stream to create robotic sounds from the input signal, or feeding multiple different tones into the buffer can be used like a wavetable.
You can also generate finely irregular delay tails and blend them simultaneously with the passing audio stream to add grit and texture to the signal—akin to organic sonic interference.
If the key to sound design with Modular is to create the widest, deepest, richest, and most diverse palette possible for sound design, then Clouds is the system for you. Add Clouds to your setup and let it rain sound.
