The Germanium Compressor's unique features are the result of a combination of several innovative approaches. The ratio setting is adjusted by ear, not by arithmetic. This dial is used to tune for more or less compression, rather than specifying a numerical value, and as long as it sounds great, there's nothing wrong with that. Similarly, the knee setting is an art form. The names of the settings refer to diode combinations, each with a different curve characteristic.
