The miniKORG 700FS, released in 2021, was a reissue analog synthesizer that added features missing from the legendary miniKORG 700S. Due to its limited production run, it sold out in no time, proving incredibly popular.
Korg, a rare global electronic instrument manufacturer that still offers a wide lineup of analog synth products today. The miniKORG 700Sm was born to introduce the sound of the original miniKORG 700 to a wider audience. It pays homage to the miniKORG 700's sound while being an enhanced model designed to meet the demands of modern musicians.

■Downsizing the miniKORG 700FS
The new miniKORG 700Sm retains all the features of the miniKORG 700FS (limited production) released in 2021. By adopting a slim keyboard and other measures, it achieves approximately 86% of the FS's size. Weighing just 5.8 kg, it's easy to carry.

■What Matters for an Analog Synth
The true beauty and richness of the miniKORG 700's sound could not be achieved using analog modeling technology, which simulates analog circuits using DSPs and other digital processing.
While the circuit itself can be copied by gathering parts based on schematics and boards, this does not produce an identical sound. Even the original reference instruments may have lost their true sound due to aging components, requiring the memories of various craftsmen familiar with the era for accurate reproduction.
We were able to revive the original sound thanks to a team of engineers who have worked on numerous synthesizer restoration projects and cultivated invaluable expertise over many years. Leading this team was Fumio Saegusa, who has been a Korg engineer since the early 1970s and was one of the original designers of the miniKORG 700S. He worked closely with Korg's sound designers to recreate the original sound as faithfully as possible. We hope those who play the miniKORG 700Sm will feel the wonder of inherited technology and the joy of owning the real thing.

■Potential as a Sub-Keyboard
Born as a sub-keyboard to complement organs—then widely used in music—by adding sounds organs lacked, the miniKORG 700 still holds immense potential today. Its beautiful lead sounds pair perfectly with stage keyboards and electric pianos.
Designed for placement atop an organ's double keyboard, its controls are intuitively arranged in a single row beneath the keys—a layout that remains easy to use and understand even today. Its appearance boasts a unique, unmistakable character.

■Features We Wanted to Add to the Original
Limited by the size of electronic components and other parts available at the time, there simply wasn't space inside the unit for more features. Advances in technology freed up space, allowing us to add effects like spring reverb, plus joysticks for pitch bend and modulation. We also included aftertouch to broaden expressive possibilities, along with an arpeggiator, USB port, MIDI IN, and CV/GATE IN ports to meet the needs of today's music scene.
Furthermore, we added memory program buttons, another feature unattainable back then. No need to memorize knob positions to recreate a sound you've created.

■Traveler Controller
The most distinctive feature of the miniKORG 700 is the Traveler Controller, consisting of two sliders located below the keyboard. The upper knob controls the cutoff frequency of the low-pass filter, while the lower knob controls the high-pass filter's cutoff frequency. The position of both knobs freely alters the sound's character. Additionally, moving the sliders left or right while holding down a key creates wah, mute, and original traveling sounds.
Frequencies lower than the cutoff set by the upper knob and higher than the cutoff set by the lower knob pass through the filter. If the positions of the two knobs are reversed, all frequencies are caught by the filter, resulting in no sound output. In theory, if the two knobs cross paths, no sound should be produced. To prevent this, the miniKORG 700 features knobs with protrusions, physically preventing them from crossing.
However, this is analog circuitry for better or worse. Designing a filter with perfect characteristics has always been impossible. Back then, some adventurous users filed down these protrusions to cross the knobs and experiment with new sound creation. Some models sold overseas were originally shipped without these protrusions.
The miniKORG 700Sm includes these knobs without protrusions, allowing you to swap them out yourself. This opens up infinite possibilities for sound design, enabling you to create sounds in unique ways.

■Second Oscillator
The miniKORG 700 was a monophonic synth with one oscillator. A year later in 1974, the miniKORG 700S was released. To increase sound variation, it added controls to the space on the left side of the keyboard, incorporating features like a second oscillator and ring modulator. This Sm model is a reissue of the 700S with these expanded features. It allows you to enjoy more dynamic changes in thick, punchy lead sounds, thanks to powerful detuning effects from the two oscillators.
