タイミングがすべて

さまざまなソースに適するよう慎重に構成された6ポジションのタイミング（TIMING）コントロールは、ビンテージユニットの遅く固定的なアタックから大きな進化を遂げています。“FAST” と “MF” では、ドラムや撥弦楽器、速いボーカルなどのトランジェントの制御に効果的で、“MED” と “MS” では、アタックとリリースがやや遅く、より多くのトランジェントを通し、リカバリーはやや長いものとなります。“SLOW ” と “AUTO” は非常に遅く、複雑なノンリニアのリリースタイムを特徴とし、よりスムーズなレベルコントロールが可能となります。

“FAST” モードに入ると各セッティングのアタックとリリースの速度が変化し、タイムコンスタント数が6から12へと倍増します。デュアルダイオードブリッジコンプレッサーの祖先となる名高いビンテージユニットと比べてスピードが劇的に飛躍し、トーンと操作性の両面において、その多彩さをより一層のものにします。

タイミングを速く設定すると、一般的には制御電圧の最大振幅が大きくなるため、より多くの倍音成分を誘発し、メインのオーディオ経路における色付けへと繫がります。一方、遅い設定では、制御電圧が大幅に平滑化されるため倍音成分が減り、より透明感のあるコンプレッションが得られます。また、このトポロジーの性質上、これらのタイムコンスタントはコンプレッションレシオ、スレッショルド、そしてソースといったいくつかの要因に順応し、わずかに変化します。このダイナミックに生成されるタイミングシフトと倍音成分が、デュアルダイオードブリッジコンプレッサーに独自の個性を与えるのです。

幅広い操作

Shelford Diode Bridge Compressor には、タイミングの他、レシオ（RATIO）、スレッショルド（THRESHOLD）、ゲイン（GAIN）、サイドチェイン・ハイパスフィルター（S/C HPF）とリンク（LINK）コントロールが装備されています。レシオはロータリースイッチによる6ポジションの切り替え式で、コンプレッサーカーブの傾きをあらかじめ定められた 1.5:1 から 8:1 までの範囲内で選択が可能です。スレッショルドは -25 dBu から +20 dBu までの範囲内で、31段階の設定が行えます。ゲインコントロールは -6 dB から +20 dB までの範囲内を31段階で設定でき、コンプレッサーによって抑えられたゲインを的確に持ち上げます。

サイドチェイン・ハイパスフィルターは、12 dB / Oct のカーブを持ち、20 Hz から 250 Hz までの範囲内で設定可能です。この機能は、コンプレッサーがミックスや楽器類が持つ強い低域に過度に反応しないようにする場合において有用です。S/C インサート（S/C INSERT）は、コンプレッサーのサイドチェイン用として常時アクティブなセンド/リターンで構成されており、コンプレッサーの反応をより細かく調整できるようにEQをインサートしたり、トリガーとなる別信号をリターンに挿入して「ダッキング」するようお使いいただくことも可能です。リンクを有効にすれば、2つのチャンネル間の制御電圧が統合され、一方のチャンネルがトリガーされると、もう一方も同様にトリガーされるようになります。これによって、ステレオソースでのセンターイメージをより安定させることができるでしょう。ただし、ステレオソースの場合、「リンクされていない」サウンドも必ず試聴するようにしてください。
