Jazz recording and mixing is an art in itself, especially when it comes to drums.

A balance of dynamic range is required, from nuanced and feather-light to vivid and explosive. James Farber has an uncanny ability to capture this accurately and at the same time bring out the true acoustic voice of the instrument he's miked. With well over 1,000 albums, over 40 years of producing top-notch records, and a discography like any other in jazz, he is nothing short of an industry icon.

Signature albums by Michael Brecker, John Scofield, and Joshua Redman, and collaborations with jazz drumming greats such as Elvin Jones, Jack DeJohnette, Paul Motian, Bill Stewart, Brian Blade, and Antonio Sanchez are testament to this, to say the least.

SDX for Superior Drummer 3 aims to pinpoint groundbreaking sounds and eras from the early days of jazz drumming to the present day. There's no better place to capture it than at New York's Power Studios, the jazz capital of the world and one of the most historic studios ever built. Not only has it housed more legendary artists than any other studio in the world, it's also where James spent his formative years and recorded some of his greatest work, and he still considers it an all-purpose location for photographing jazz drums.

There are a total of seven kits selected for this session, each chosen to represent a distinct jazz era, sound, or milestone record in James' career. Not only were all kits sampled with drumsticks, but selected kits and instruments were also captured with brushes, rods, mallets, and hands.

In addition to drums, there are a variety of mix presets for each kit and configuration, giving you instant access to professional, balanced drum mixes created by James himself. These mixes can be used as is or as a starting point for creating virtually any sound your imagination allows.

This SDX boils down to an engineer, a kit, and a studio. If you're passionate about jazz and want to add a bookend collection of drum sounds to your toolbox, straight from the jazz capital of the world, one of the most influential jazz recording engineers of the past 40 years.
