■ZEN DAC 3's DAC stage is based on the Burr-Brown DAC chip. Selected for their natural-sounding ""musicality"" and true native architecture, iFi uses them in a wide range of products. This DAC chip, combined with the XMOS chip used for input processing, allows you to deliver all digital audio formats, including Hi-Res PCM, native DSD, and MQA, with excellent sound quality. Considering its price range, the ZEN DAC 3's digital audio capabilities are very impressive.

■PCM and DXD audio data supports up to 32bit/768 kHz and DSD rates from 2.8 MHz (DSD64) to 12.4 MHz (DSD256). Due to the Burr-Brown DAC chip's true native design, PCM and DSD follow separate paths. This allows DSD to remain ""bit perfect"" in its native format all the way to analog conversion. Many DACs that claim DSD compatibility will accept DSD data, but convert it to PCM. In short, ZEN DAC 3 is a great and affordable solution for DSD purists.

■Another circuit feature that distinguishes iFi's DACs, including the ZEN DAC 3, from other DACs is that iFi programs its XMOS chips in-house. While other manufacturers simply use off-the-shelf firmware shipped with their chips, which are generally not optimized for audio-grade sound, iFi programs its own custom firmware to enhance audio performance.

■iFi's continuous software development allows for the addition and optimization of functions through firmware updates, allowing you to adjust ZEN DAC 3 to your preferences and keep it at the cutting edge for a long time. Users can also download and install different versions of firmware to try out different digital filters if they wish. ■The headphone amplifier stage has a switchable gain function, which iFi calls PowerMatch. For sensitive earphones such as IEMs (in-ear monitors), turning PowerMatch off provides ultra-low noise performance. On the other hand, for headphones that require more output, such as most on/over-ear type headphones, press the PowerMatch button on the front panel to increase the gain.

■The introduction of XBass+ analog correction processing takes the personalized audio experience one step further. XBass+ is a proprietary circuit for boosting low frequencies, and its sophisticated features allow it to enhance bass frequencies without muddying the midrange while maintaining bass clarity. For example, it's useful with some open-back headphones that have light bass. ""Corrects"" the bass so that it sounds the way the artist intended.

■ZEN DAC 3 is equipped with 4.4mm balanced outputs on both the front and rear panels. This is a relatively new terminal, designed to allow balanced signal transmission between compact products that cannot use traditional XLR connections.

■The 4.4mm balanced output on the front is placed alongside the common 6.3mm single-ended headphone output, making it compatible with all types of headphones, both balanced and single-ended, while taking full advantage of the balanced headphone design. A 4.4mm balanced output on the rear allows connection to an amplifier or active speaker with a balanced line input (4.4mm input, or XLR input via 4.4mm-XLR cable). It also has a single-ended RCA output.

■These line outputs (balanced and single-ended) can be switched between ""variable"" and ""fixed"", increasing the versatility of ZEN DAC 3. Variable settings enable volume on the audio signal and allow the ZEN DAC 3 to act as a preamplifier for connecting to power amplifiers or active speakers. The fixed setting bypasses the volume and fixes the output to 4.2V (balanced) or 2.1V (single-ended) and can be connected to a preamp or integrated amplifier.
