FIRE is an 8-voice polyphonic drum and percussion synthesizer with a variety of digital synthesis algorithms that can be distributed across eight channels. The sound engine can produce a variety of digital percussion sounds generated by FM synthesis or virtual analog synthesis. It can also create simple monophonic bass and synthesizer sounds.

During development, our primary concern was direct and simple usability in live operation. The hardware basically consists of two modules (they are a set). One is a basic module with all controls, displays, MIDI connections, two CV inputs, and five audio outputs. The other is a separate X-FIRE I/O extension module with 16 analog trigger/gate/CV inputs and sockets for 3 additional audio outputs.

Both modules are connected via a 60 cm ribbon cable so they can be mounted anywhere in the rack. The basic module is only 22 HP wide, so it can also operate alone without the extension module as a MIDI source module.
