“ORCHESTRAL SWARM” is a new benchmark in the innovation of orchestral libraries. It greatly expands the expressive power of the palette of existing orchestral libraries, and allows you to create a huge number of completely new textures.

Rather than simply using long notes, this library creates inspiring sound undulations by having multiple players play short notes at random. Rather than just playing at random, the players adjust their playing to match the orchestra, use a wide variety of articulations, and match the playing style of the instrument to create a more musical sound.

This library was created in collaboration with Bleeding Fingers and was featured in the Hans Zimmer and Radiohead collaboration “(ocean) bloom” (Blue Planet 2).

New orchestral sound

“ORCHESTRAL SWARM” is an innovative collaboration with Bleeding Fingers (Planet Earth II, Sons Of Liberty, Roman Empire: Reign Of Blood) who wanted to create a new library for use in the BBC's flagship series ‘Blue Planet II’. Their concept was to record short notes of the same pitch played randomly by each player. This approach creates a fine cloud of sound, a beautiful long note texture generated from layers of micro-moments, a replacement for the traditional long note. As featured in the groundbreaking TV show, it is the perfect soundtrack to imagine the ocean.

SPITFIRE AUDIO is no stranger to this technique, having already used it in the SWARM library series. This machine pushed us in the direction of using this technique for orchestras. We at SPITFIRE AUDIO quickly passed the first library in secret to the Bleeding Fingers team, and they used it exclusively for the program. It was also used in the Hans Zimmer and Radiohead collaboration, “(ocean) bloom”. After that, we at SPITFIRE AUDIO went back to the studio and recorded more orchestral material to expand the short notes, techniques and layers even further, creating the most complete library for media composers.

If you're tired of long, quiet notes, or if you prefer short ostinatos, this new texture, with its innovative approach to orchestral sampling, will breathe new life into your music.

Various Oceans

This library is comprised of string, brass, and woodwind ensembles. Each ensemble is recorded individually, and uses common articulations for each section in the pointillist approach unique to the SWARM series. Many of the sounds in this library have never been sampled before. From bassoon pops to horn flutter tongues, a wide range of techniques are incorporated and combined using the SWARM approach to extend the palette of existing orchestras. The rhythmic elements of the music can be given by the included or past ensemble short. In addition, by providing two reverbs on the board, it can be blended naturally with existing orchestral libraries.

The British Grove studio, a source of pride for the UK

In this session, the entire ensemble was recorded in the same way as other SPITFIRE AUDIO libraries. The recording location was British Grove, one of the highest-altitude studios on the planet. Founded by Mark Knopfler, British Grove is one of the few large-scale studios built in the new millennium, and it boasts cutting-edge technology and legendary equipment (including a restored EMI desk used by George Martin and the Beatles).

During recording, we used a Neve 88r console, as well as an EMI TG console for the on-board/Broadhurst Gardens pre- and mid-room microphones. We used Royers, Ela M, Neumanns and Coles microphones.

The size and ambience of the recording stage is medium, so the detail and power of the instruments are captured in full. The character and presence of the sound is captured in full.
