SPITFIRE AUDIO's first production, “Dry Stage. Ensemble Library” was inspired by the genius Bernard Herrmann, who was active in film music. His many famous and groundbreaking scores, including ‘Citizen Kane’, ‘Journey to the Center of the Earth’, ‘Psycho’, ‘Vertigo’ and ‘Taxi Driver’, continue to influence many composers working today.
In creating this library, SPITFIRE AUDIO has worked exclusively with the late Mr. Herrmann's estate, painstakingly collecting and unpacking each of his legendary orchestration obsessions. This library was recorded at AIR STUDIOS (London) in Lindhurst Hall with Grammy-winning audio engineer Simon Rhodes (Avatar, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Spectre, Harry Potter, There Will Be Blood, etc.). We have recreated all of Mr. Herrmann's particularities, including the rough, lively, and straightforward sound that he would surely have recorded, the group formation of the performers, the unusual combination of instruments, chords, effects, etc. If you want to create lively and unique scoring, this “Composer's Toolkit” will be an indispensable one.
OVERVIEW
This Composer's Toolkit is not an “old-style library” at all. In creating this library, SPITFIRE AUDIO studied the scores in close relation to Mr. Herrmann's belongings, and unraveled the process of finishing his scores. With this in mind, we recorded many sessions to create a modern library that would make you feel as if Mr. Herrmann were actually present, and that could be used across a wide range of musical genres. This library, recorded at AIR STUDIOS 1, includes a studio orchestra, combinations of trumpet, xylophone, trombone and timpani, low-pitched strings and horns, harp and vibraphone, as well as ondes Martenot, synths and percussion. , timpani, etc., as well as low-pitched strings and horns, harp and vibraphone, and even ondes Martenot, synths, percussion, timpani, etc., making it a truly all-powerful library for adding punch.
BACKGROUND
Bernard Herrmann is one of the great composers of our time. His television and film scores are not only famous, but are synonymous with mid-20th century film music. He collaborated with Orson Welles on 'Citizen Kane' and Martin Scorsese on 'Taxi Driver', and he had a long-standing partnership with Alfred Hitchcock, who composed the music for 'Vertigo', 'Psycho', 'The Birds' and 'Marnie'. The scale of the works that Mr. Herman created is breathtakingly great. His work not only had a great influence on film scores of the time, but even in modern times, his presence has given scores even more vitality, such as Quentin Tarantino's use of the theme of the twisted nerve in “Kill Bill”, and the eerie whistle from that Kill Bill is a sound that anyone in the world would immediately recognize.
Herrman had established a very unique and unprecedented style of composition. Herrman's orchestration was completely original, very bold and creative. He always created sounds that fit the film well, and had a great influence on film scores that followed (for example, the film score for Psycho is famous as a new writing style for horror films). He challenged the conventions of the time by using specific instrumental ensembles (for example, the score for Psycho is famous for only using strings, and 12 flutes feature in “Torn Curtain”) and unique instrumental collaborations (for example, harp and vibraphone in Vertigo, and muted horns and pizzicato strings in North by Northwest). At the same time, he began to use electronic instruments in his scores, which was very pioneering at the time. The electronic instrument Ondes Martenot in “The Day the Earth Stood Still” and the amplified Moog synth sound in “Sisters/Endless Nights” were avant-garde sounds that you would never have heard in a cinema at the time. He also requested that the powerful playing techniques traditionally used by other Hollywood composers be stopped in the scores he conducted, and this style had a great influence on the subsequent changes in performance.
Mr. Herman always had an infinite curiosity and passion for new music. He supported several composers, and through his efforts, they became famous composers known by everyone. He was also active as a conductor of the CBS Symphony Orchestra, and many of the pieces he composed were broadcast by radio stations, and became familiar to a wide range of audiences at the time.
Mr. Herrmann was a great man who remained true to his beliefs and built a solid performance style on the uncertain existence of art. He continues to be respected by modern composers and has had a great influence on film scores.
So of course, when we found out that SPITFIRE AUDIO would be collaborating with the great legacy of Mr. Herrmann, we were so surprised and moved that we just fell to the floor. We have worked hard to bring a very unique and varied new sound and potential to the busy composers of today, and have captured Mr. Herrmann's great talent and approach to film scores in this library.
