ALBION V TUNDRA is a composer tool that uses an orchestra to create sounds inspired by the glaciers of Scandinavia, evoking the scent of the forest and the solitude and tranquility of the earth.

For “ALBION V TUNDRA”, we sampled over 100 pieces of silent and edgy orchestral performances with a Scandinavian spirit using a method never seen before. The orchestral content consists of drone sounds, percussion, and a warp synth section full of character.

Features




ICY STRINGS
A string sound that is as cold and shiny as ice. To achieve this, it was necessary to hollow out the center of the low range of the frequency map, and Spitfire Audio made the momentous decision to remove the violas from the orchestra. Instead, a rich cello section (12 players) and double bass section (6 players) were placed in the center of the studio, and an enhanced violin section (20 & 18 players) was placed in Antiphon (opposite side of the room).

The huge amount of articulations recorded covers a wide range of techniques, from the popular flautando and other classical techniques to mutes. Also, because it was recorded with a poly-divisi section, you can hear the sound of each player, even at this size. As a feature, the players were asked not to apply pine resin to their bows when recording.
We made an effort to record the sound of the instruments louder than the studio ambience. The strings were also recorded in two sections (high and low).





WHISPERING CHORUSSES OF BRASS & WIND
With the “chorus” in mind, we prepared four bands (High Winds, Mid Winds, Mid Brass, Low Brass). These bands were created with attention to detail, not only in terms of sound quality, but also in terms of ease of use and playability as a material. They create a natural sheen.

The Tundra Orchestra was created with the theme of creating the sound of an orchestra that fades away slowly and quietly into oblivion. The result is a sound set with a deep dynamic range and a very expressive quality, and it is very easy to use as a standalone orchestral tool while also having a unique quality.

VRAL GRID
Because I was conscious of the creative process, I thought about including harmonium and shurti box (an Indian drone instrument) in the set, but these didn't fit with the magic of the Tundra Orchestra. So this idea was dropped. Instead, I carefully recorded the delicate sounds from the moment the reed actually makes a sound to the moment it starts to hiss. This allowed us to record a variety of granular articulations, and we were able to create a very special Norwegian-style EVO GRID with a sweet, attractive sound. It is possible to spread 32 different patterns across 12 different ranges, and by clicking on the dice buttons, it is possible to randomly assign patterns, allowing you to create an infinite number of textures.

STEPHESON'S STEAM BAND
STEPHESON'S STEAM BAND, the hugely successful Spitfire Audio Warp Sound Orchestra, recorded on Albion One and 3, was created using a different approach this time. Instead of the digital processing and mastering tools used in previous productions, Roland Space Chorus Echoes were used this time, and Eventides and Axe FX Pros were used in a novel chain. As well as using orchestral sound material, I also used the harmonium and shurthi box sound material mentioned earlier, so it became a new “STEPHESON'S STEAM BAND” inspired by moss and earthy things. As it uses the eDNA engine, you can easily create your own presets.

DARWIN PERCUSSION ENSEMBLE
A dark and epic drum combo designed to punctuate the timeline and emphasize scenes. Like Arvo Part's “Cantus in Memoriam Benjamin Britten”, it features huge Verdi bass drums and taiko played very small.

BRUNEL LOOPS
The precise, detailed rhythms of the man who has the terrible reputation of not being able to make percussion sound like percussion were recorded in the dry studio of Spitfire Audio. These loops give the score a frosty atmosphere. The eDNA platform is also used here, allowing you to make adjustments as you like. The presets were created by Spitfire's team of award-winning composers and producers.
